RPGs need a great story in order to keep gamers playing and moving forward. What RPG do you think has the best story? In my opinion, I think Xenogears has the best story of any RPG ever followed by Chrono Cross. Their stories are complex but extremely heartwarming. What RPG do you think has the best story?

For me I would have to give that title to FF X because it started off first very slow but when the game picked up I could not put the game down.

I have to agree with Xenogears, it's one of my favourite games of all time, mainly because of its amazing storyline. Out of the Final Fantasy series, I would choose FFVII, and in that case I believe that its the characters that make the story so great.

I really enjoyed the story to Suikoden 1 for Playstation. I loved the idea of recruiting members into your army and flying them to your castle via your giant dragon that soared through the clouds. That game has a special place in my heart.

I find it really difficult to find RPG's on the PC that have a good and consistent storyline, but I found Rusty Hearts which has a great storyline for me - the whole game and all the quests are based on the storyline, rather than just throwing a few loose ends here and there to form some kind of story. And the storyline has videos as well which shows you what is going on which I think is great. For Xbox, I really like the story line of the first Ninja Gaiden as I think it flows well!

Vampire: Masquerade - Bloodlines had quite a damn good one. The ending wasn't as good as expected but overall the story was amazing.

PC. It's quite old though... but still definitely worth the play.

    Planescape: Torment

Nothing has ever beat it since I first played it in the early 2000s, absolutely brilliant plot and excellent twists.

    Came here to say this!
There is just no storyline that even comes close to Planescape: Torment, people with a different opinion just haven't played it yet :)
The whole game is basically a massive novel with little focus on combat, just huge dialogues and plot twists.

Final Fantasy VII because the story really moved me and Final Fantasy X because it made me want to continue to the end to see what happens. Both of those had absolutely beautiful stories. Tales of Destiny and Tales of the Abyss are also interesting. In fact, the story of Tales of the Abyss is so good that an anime was made with the same title and is based on the story of the game. ;)

    I'll mention
    1. Shadow Hearts
    2. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
    3. Eternal Sonata
I also want to mention Deus Ex 1, even though it's not an RPG.

Too many to choose from, but KOTOR2 and Witcher 2 stood out to me the most.

The Witcher for me mainly because of how intriguing the premise is. It's got political stuff, conspiracies, war, love, friendship, and plot twists that kept me coming back for more which is why I can't wait for the finale to the trilogy.

Now that I think about it more it's almost impossible to pick just one RPG and I forgot about some of the older RPG's with great story-lines like Champions of Norrath for example.

I only played the second one, is it worth going back to the first one just for the story?

I would say maybe just read about it on wikis and stuff instead. I have a really hard time enjoying the first Witcher. The combat just doesn't work for me.

I've noticed a few people say Xenogears has the best story of RPG games. I have to admit, it is high up on my scales as well. But it's not alone for me.

In my opinion, it's a three way tie between Xenogears, Vagrant Story, and Digital Devil Saga

In my opinion it's Chrono Trigger, I haven't played an RPG with such a gripping story since I finished that years ago. I'm pretty sure it only felt so intensely interesting because it was one of the first RPGs I played, so I'm gonna try and play it again on an emulator to see if it holds up!
