I have a friend who has played every one of the Elder Scrolls games so far. He keeps saying I should try them. I know there are five (plus the online version) out there. I tried the online Beta and enjoyed it. Which ES game do you think I should try first?

Skyrim! I personally enjoyed that one the best, but I have a friend who hated it and preferred Marrowind over it 100%

I'm tied between Skyrim and Morrowind. Skyrim is definitely more advanced with the new technology and all, but Morrowind really made you feel like you were really IN the game.

There was no magic compass that seemed to know where your objectives were. It was just you, alone in the world. Loved it. But Skyrim has way better combat, which is a pretty crucial part of the game after all.

definitely morrowwind, i will never forget Jumping across the entire map in one leap with soul trap glitch, and beating the final boss by merely Levitating above him and shooting him to death. The environment of Morrowind would definitely surpass Skyrim if it was crafted in the same engine.

I was a big fan of Oblivion, but when Skyrim came out in 2011, it just blew my mind. I mean, it was just spectacular. I am still playing that game.

I think my favourite has to be Skyrim. I could never really get into Morrowind or Oblivion, and as much as I love ESO, I don't really care for games that are subscription based like that, I don't really make enough money for them to be worth it.

I would say Morrowind, Skyrim was my 1st ES game, but I enjoyed Morrowind a tad more sure the graphics are not as great, but still a great game I have yet to play Oblivion yet so I can't say anything about it maybe one day when I have time I will give it a go!

Oblivion is also my favorite followed by Morrowind, both had epic storylines. Then I would choose Daggerfall, then Arena, and finally Skyrim which wasn't nearly as addictive, broad, or challenging as the other Elder Scrolls games. The storyline was a bore, the environments are stiff and unchanging, and it's full of non-interactive NPCs.

The following are my feelings on the games...

    - Daggerfall (1996)
My first ES game. This was definitely an epic RPG with an extremely deep and rich world filled with tons of content. To this day, I still could not wrap my head around just how awesome this game was. I still have the big Gold Foil box with the skeleton warrior on the cover.

    - Battlespire (1998)
My least favorite ES game, because it was buggy enough to be a show stopper. It was a flop with potential. I still have the big green and black box.

    - Morrowind (2002)
This game was by far the most memorable ES game I had ever played. It felt like the world was alive with its intricacies, politics, noble houses, tons of intertwining stories and lots of moddable land and features made it top notch. It set the standard for what an ES game should be about. Though I have to admit for such a huge in-game world, I often felt lonely wandering from place to place. In some way, I wished I could share my travels with another player, a friend, etc.

    - Oblivion
I have to admit, this was my second least favorite ES game. Indeed, it was prettier than Morrowind, but it felt lacking somehow. It didn't feel as epic as Morrowind in content and in the world design. Also, the story felt meh to me as well.

    - Skyrim
This is definitely one of the most beautiful games I had ever played. With all the mods and expansions available, it really extended the open worldliness of this game. The only reasonable issue I have with it is that you can only choose one of two sides. If only this had a better role play choice and allow your character to choose a third, fourth and maybe even a fifth route, it would have definitely made Skyrim my favorite ES game, but it's at the moment almost tied with Morrowind. Though I like Skyrim a little bit more.

Daggerfall will always be my favorite ES game. It was the first one I played and at the time, it was also the first game I had found where I wasn't stuck doing a boring quest and only get to see the map areas as needed for whatever quest I was on. Yes, the graphics weren't fancy, the dungeons were usually the same 6 or 7 layouts--even for supposedly above ground castles--and the quests themselves were of a limited kind. Now the other games were ok in their own right but there's still something special about the first one you play in a series or genre.

I've been watching and waiting for DaggerfallXL (http://xlengine.com/blog/) to be finished. It's been a long time in the works but they also have a huge ambition: to completely modernize the old Daggerfall. They are working on graphics, new quests, finishing storylines and upgrading the terrain to more 3D. They had also stated they were considering using some of the old, unfinished content that installs with the game to bring guilds and factions to completetion. There was just so much Daggerfall tried to do but in the end the devs ran out of time and investors weren't too keen on them spending time and money adding expansions to it back then so they moved on to the next chapter.

Morrowind GOTY edition improved the graphics and got rid of some of the bugs. Modding helped extend the replayability for me somewhat. I made the mistake of trying TES 1: Arena between when Morrowind came out and the first trailer for Oblivion--it was like going from World of Warcraft to playing an old text only MUD game. I never got that far playing Oblivion because it just seemed too blah to me. I still haven't tried Skyrim and not sure I want to because from what I've seen on demo's and watching friends play, it looks more like a console game forced to be a CRPG.

Neither Redguard nor Battlespire were truly RPG's so even though they carry The Elder Scrolls as part of their name, I don't consider them to be part of the story.

Morrowind had much better immersion, in my opinion. I think a major limitation of Skyrim was that it had voice acted dialogue, limiting the NPC behavior significantly.

Skyrim is my all time favorite Elder Scrolls game. This is because I only truly get immersed in an RPG if there are good graphics. The story line is fantastic, and the whole progression of the game is awesome. I just wish it didn't end to fast. My only complaint with the game is that it got boring too fast.

If I were to pick on e game from the ES series, it would probably be Skyrim. You all know why this would be anyone's choice.

In my opinion Skyrim is by far the best one. It took all the great mechanics of the first couple of games and perfected them even more. The scale is nice and big with a good sense of density without repeating itself too much.

I maintain that Oblivion is the most pure ES game, but I personally think that Skyrim is the most entertaining and engaging.

I'd say Oblivion or Skyrim, but ESO is definitely not the correct answer!
