I've never played anything from the series, despite really wanting to - it's just one of those games that I've never made time for. But now I have a laptop capable of playing games, and I'm considering getting hold of one of them. Which game would you recommend for a first-timer? If there's a definitive 'best' game, I'd rather not play that straight away. I'd like to play more than one game in the series, and if I play the 'best' one first the others may not be as enjoyable by comparison.
My favorite Fallout is Fallout 2. My 2nd favorite is New Vegas. Both are excellent games, have decent graphics, you can mod them too, and the story is simply amazing. Fallout 3 is my least favorite so I wouldn't recommend plating it first.
For me I would say Fallout 3, but I have yet to play the 1st and 2nd one's, but I have watched some videos of them on YouTube!
Fallout 3 is amazing but I definitely prefer the weapon and armor selection from New Vegas, Fallout 1 and 2 are great but I think the first person switch is much more immersive.
Definitely New Vegas with Fallout 2 as a close second. They really capture that post-apocalypse and rebuilding society aspect that I really love.
My favorite Fallout series was the first one to come out and the first one I played, 1997's Fallout. I think it had a big impact on me since it was the first game of it's kind that I ever played, It really blew my mind. I also really liked Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, though the story-line as not as good as the first Fallout, the game play made up for it.
I played through 3 and New Vegas and I'm currently playing 2 and I have to say my personal favorite among these is NV: it's got great amount of content and a very entertaining and immersive storyline. For a first-timer, I suggest you to start with the second one (which many deem the best gameplay-wise) and then play 3 and NV.
Fallout 3 was the best for me being that the improvements over the Fallout 2 was so drastic it blew me away. Subsequent release that is New Vegas didn't have as much impact because there wasn't much difference in terms of gameplay.
So far, I like New Vegas the most because it has the gameplay of modern FO but the characterization, lore and story of classic FO. Perfect mix. That said, I haven't actually PLAYED through Fallout 1. I tried to but then I got locked into a bathroom because my ally was blocking the one exit and I couldn't push him... and he was too strong to kill (plus I didn't WANT to kill him). Good thing FO2 has the ability to push people.
Maybe I need to play New Vegas again, but when I 1st played both games I got a more enjoyment out of the 3rd one maybe I missed something and it's worth playing a 2nd time.
Fallout 3 is my personal favorite. Although New Vegas improved things quite a bit in terms of mechanics, I just could not get into the story or the characters at all. It didn't feel very imaginative. I also really liked Fallout 2. The first time I played, I just ended up killing everybody I could find, and I think I ended up not being able to finish the game because all the NPCs were dead.
New Vegas was much more imaginative than FO3, IMO. The writing was much better, it really showed that they had the people responsible for FO1 and FO2 working on it, especially with how they treated Super Mutants. The smart Super Mutants are much better than that cliche "dumb but strong" cliche they used for all but one of the Super Mutants in FO3.
That's true, but I just couldn't get into the setting at all. Maybe it was just the color palette. The endless brown desert got old for me fast.
Both FO3 and FONV have really lame color palettes, yeah. FO3 is all like... greenish, and FONV is all brownish... I guess the limited color palette makes everything look crappy enough considering it's a post-apocalyptic world or something?
New Vegas is probably my favorite for the simple fact that it was the first one I tried which kind of gives me an initial bias but I also saw it as a vastly superior game when compared to 3 which seemed kind of lack luster. Also out of the isometric games I really like Tactics even though that was not the most Fallouty game in the series, 2 was also pretty damn good but never really got into as much as the others.
I only played a little of the other games in the series, but Fallout 3 was the one that I spent the most time with. I loved it, from the beginning of starting life in the hatch, to exploring, and upgrading. I loved that if you saw something in the distance, you could actually go there and it was a real location.
New Vegas is a much better game. The writing is at the top of the list for me. I felt NV had better quests, factions, and characters.
I was die hard Fallout 2 fan, and I was excited for Fallout 3 but wary that they were going to screw up the series. That first moment when you exit the vault and you see the wasteland in 3D. I was hooked. A fantastic game, and now one of my all time favorites. Fallout 3 was such an impressive modernization of a classic, while still its own game. Countless hours spent. New Vegas was disappointing.
I like three a lot. The ethical and moral decisions you have to make are huge, which I like in games. I can play it different ways multiple times and get different results
