MMO games come primarily as standalone downloads such as World of Warcraft, Rift, Aion, Tera and World of Tanks. On the other hand, there are a few that you can play through the browser such as Aurora Blade and Shadowtale.

What do you prefer? Browser based or standalone download and why?

I prefer standalone, because most of the time they have much more content then browser based ones, and are visually more advanced as well. I think there is a limit to what browser games can do, and standalone on-disk or digital download games will always be superior.

Although browser based games has come a long way in graphics and rendering engines, I agree that it's still very limited. Especially when all the content resides server side, which means things can slow the heck down. The only other positive to this is that at least people don't have to download gigabytes worth of updates.

I also prefer those games that require installers, or standalone as what you guys prefer calling it. These games are well developed gameplay and graphics-wise. And while internet browsers evolve, so does the never-ending demand for better graphics and realistic gameplay of games. By the time internet browsers are capable of playing games like Skyrim, installer-based games have already reached a different level of graphics and gameplay that require higher system requirements. Browser-based games will never be able to keep up with installer-based games.

One thing that we could very well see in the future, would be older games available to play in browser format. If OS` keep developing the way they are, and also the software that runs on them, it would not be out of the question for us to play even Skyrim browser based in a few years. However, that is very far off from our point of view right now.

True. However, technology evolves, so if internet browsers have improved, so does installer-based games. It's not like the evolution of installer-based games will be stagnant in order for browser games to keep up with the times. Browser based games will always lag behind installed-based games.

I really hate browser based games. They have always been lower quality and worse gameplay for me.

Obviously Standalone. They are basically the AAA version of MMOs.

Yeah, me too, a vote for standalone. The graphics and 'visuality' of the games is always better, not to mention having more content. I hate when a good game lags so much it's not even worth playing, just because it's browser based.

I have to go with standalone as well. For me when I have a browser open I am working, blogging or some other way of researching. I have tabs over tabs open, to me tabs are for other stuff - not gaming.

You are stuck at the mercy of what the coder can do and trying to play the game over different browsers. I have tried these games in the past but even testing with different browsers always results the same way - bad game play.

I had a good time playing RS, back before "installer" MMO's became popular back in the day. But like everyone else, the browser games just don't have the same quality of graphics and the gameplay is almost always lacking in a big way. I also notice that I have worse FPS and lag on browser games.

Pretty much every aspect of gaming is better on the installer MMO's

I prefer the standalone download, but I honestly can't come up with a reason. I just simply prefer it. I suppose it's because of the lag I experience on browsers, along with the graphic quality being significantly low in any browser-based game I've ever played.

Stand alone games still stand alone in my book. Browser based games don't run as smooth, and the graphics are a bit weak for the most part.

Standalone downloads all the way. Standalone downloads are just overall better games!

Browser games can be fun for little while, but I just can't ever stick with them!

Standalone all the way. Brower based games are better suited for casual gaming. If I want an immersive gaming experience, you can't beat standalone. They have better graphics, mechanics and isn't always internet/server dependent to enjoy it.

I prefer standalone. I hate browser based games for some reason. I've tried one game and I had so many issues with it I never went back. Standalone is more stable and in terms of performance it's better.

I like both, but I'd have to prefer standalone. Mainly because if I clear out my cookies or cache, my data goes along with it for a browser based game.

The downside to standalone, however, is the amount of space it takes up. I haven't run across a launcher that doesn't take up about 20+ gb of my memory, yet. :( However, they usually deliver on the amount you can do compared to their browser brethren.

Standalone games for sure. I hate browser based games too.
