Why are the lands set up by levels of the characters?

I haven't played World of Warcraft for a while now, but at one time it was my favorite game. I came from more "freedom of movement" games before it, like Ultima Online. I still don't like the idea of being so limited on where you can go as a younger player. MMORPGs are supposed to be more free than a traditional game, but the "lands by level" just made it feel like a DVD game. This limitation and the fact that WoW is not very diverse in other areas made me decide to leave the game after a year.

I'm not sure. I've played many other games that friends who are seasoned players wanted me to play. To be honest, playing with higher levels is basically just a virtual follow the leader and that kind of gameplay gets on my nerves. I want to play the game, not do what some guy says because he got the chance to do it himself. I've got one friend who is especially bad about this. It's the same vice-versa, I don't like being the leader in 'the follow the leader' type gameplay like that either. In the end, I like the levels are closer together.

Depends. Usually there's long quest lines that tie areas in. People also like having structure and it helps new players to plan out where to go next. Different styles of gameplay appeal to different people, but most people like having objectives to meet and some form of structure that tells them what they need to do. Once people get comfortable with something, then they're more willing to explore and break structure a bit.

I suppose you are right to an extent, Cereus. Ultima Online also do quests, but they did not appear until the game had been around several years. I would rather be able to free range than have missions that I had to do. It is likely that quests are developed in aging online communities to keep the old players interested. In the case of Ultima when they introduced new races to play, they didn't just give the option to play an elf. To become an elf there were numerous missions to fulfill.

WoW has always been like that. You start in your starting area where all the creatures are level 1 - 3, and then you move on from there, and each new land you go to, they are a higher and higher level. In fact most MMORPGs I've played are like that (Aion certainly is and I get the feeling ArcheAge is also set up that way).

There are so many ways to exploit the MMOs that have completely open areas that aren't locked by level, though. It makes things unfair for the players that don't choose to exploit such openness. I'm fine with how things are right now.

You shouldn't forget that this game is more than a decade old now, so you have your typical limits in the game that you don't see nowadays. They want you to keep playing to see what lies beyond the boundary.

I hate seeing these level lands at least when they are in a weird order. I remember having to run through a level 35-45 when I was like 19 and I kept on dying which was annoying because all I wanted to do was get to the level land I wanted. But it is nice so you know where you need to be for your level and not be lost in the world randomly.
