Why do I get owned by Nosalises?

    Hello,

I'm a Metro 2033 veteran and played Ranger mode in that game primarily because I liked the added challenge, but also because I liked the more realistic damage model. Oftentimes, a single revolver shot could kill a Nosalise, but the trade off was of course that you died very easily too.

Fast forward to Metro: Last Light and I pre-ordered it specifically for the Ranger DLC. I've been enjoying the game so far, but the damage model seems to be -very- different. Nosalises typically destroy me, to the point that I'm almost afraid to fight them! I'm in the Catacombs right now, at the part early on where you come to a few dead bodies around a fire and a few Nosalises jump down and rush you. Using a Kalash 2012 (I upgraded, figuring that it must be more powerful than the regular Kalash), I can unload an entire clip point-blank into the faces of a Nosalise horde and kill maybe 1 of them. What's more, it seems that my revolver (Long barrel, laser sight) actually takes three! shots to kill a Nosalise!

Am I doing something wrong, or have Nosalises purposefully been upgraded from cannon fodder to mutant-ninja-badasses?

    Does your recoil get messy?

    Do you aim for head?

I used the Saiga and the sniper rifle for Nosalises and it worked really well, I thought they were annoying but nothing hard to pass.

Depends on how you press your mouse button.
The longer you hold it in the less accurate it gets, so I suggest to "tap" it. Otherwise.... I dont know. I got through that part with hardly any bullets left in the first place :/

It doesn't seem like accuracy should be my issue. Literally they're rushing me, point blank range, I've practically got the gun nozzle in a Nosalise's mouth, so in this situation it seems like holding down the trigger would be best.

I believe I'm playing on the easier Ranger difficulty. How does the damage compare to other difficulties (i.e. are things easier or harder to kill on normal difficulties, or on the harder Ranger difficulty? Obviously harder Ranger could lead to less bullets of course, but that's not my issue).

I haven't had that much trouble with Nosalises on Ranger Hardcore.
My preferred tactic against them was to bottleneck them into an area using firebombs and then just using my Ashot to one-shot them in the face.
I believe there are plenty of Duplet shotguns left lying around in the Catacombs, so try using one of them, or you could resort to using match grade ammo for the Kalash 2012?

yeah if it takes three revolver shot to kill a nosali, then its probably aimfail. and spraying an entire kalash clip tends to be pretty inaccurate, with recoil and such. the best thing against muties is shotguns I have found, even though a hs with any wep would killa nosali. just aim for the head and don't let them get to close. when they start slapping you, your aim will be thrown around

I've noticed hit detection can get a bit weird when stuff is right in front of you. Seems to happen when stuff is clipping through your gun during attack animations.

Damage does seem to be different in this one. I was having problems with the duplet not killing things even at point-blank range. However, other weapons such as the ashot, tihar, helsing, and preved will kill almost always in 1 shot at varying ranges.

well, I found pretty much all weapons kill on 1 shot when you hit the head. sneaked around headshooting howlers and nosalises with both kalash and VSK. Maybe it depends a bit on wether you are in stealth or discovered?

Yeah, I think enemies tend to take more damage when you've not been spotted. For one thing a throwing knife in a nosalis' leg will kill it from stealth, but when I used them on sections where you have to hold out against them, a throwing knife to the nose didn't seem to even trouble them.

But I noticed this especially with human enemies, an silenced AK round to the upper torso/neck would one shot kill from stealth, but once I'd been spotted it seemed to take at least 3 shots to anywhere other than the head.

    Agree!!

    During Depot
I took a shot in stealth with a Throwing knife. Sorti missed, Hit him right in the rear, "Left Butt cheek". :embarassed: Down for the count. :twitch:
It would have been better if he just started to hop around.

    Some take downs were cool!
    One,
The soldier fell slowly to the side, Then started to shoot off a few rounds. "Alerting everyone else"
I swear he took out one other soldier when he falling and shooting.

I also prefer the shot gun. Haven't tried the Saiga yet.
But, Just love the Four Barrel breech loading shotgun.

Makes a mess when the Nosalises charge you & Give them all four at once.

    Another time,
I forget the name of the weapon. It was the BB gun.
I was running low on regular ammo. Ran in to some Watchmen
It took only three shots or less each. Maybe its because of the quick recovery time
between shots, But I was surprised!!!

Well, a joke loses it's funny when you have to explain it... But here goes:

'Rear Left butt cheek' would imply that this guy had more than your average amount of butt cheeks for a human being. :eek:hwell:

I too played 2033 on Ranger and loved the game so much. Started playing Last Light yesterday on Hardcore straight away. The Nosalise caused me a problem on the bit where you are waiting for someone to turn up on some sort of make shift raft, in the meantime you get jumped by hordes of Nosalise while you are waiting for this raft to turn up. All I used was the quad barrell sawn off shotgun, timed my shots and owned them. Took me like 7 attempts as they ripped me to bits for a while but I recommend a shotgun for anything that bites or melees!

  17. I have never had a problem with them.

There is no glitch or bug, if you shoot at them and they don't die - you are not hitting your targets, simple as that.

Any shotgun takes them out with a single shot, if the pellets connect. They go down with a single 5.45 headshot too and .44 works wonders.

Too bad you can't punch them in the face anymore:
