Why do you still play?

So, I played WoW from release up until Mists of Pandaria. When that expansion hit, one month in, I just couldn't find the motivation to farm all those dailies anymore. The game felt like a shadow of what it once was.

I don't know if this is just nostalgia talking or what, but I went back for Warlords of Draenor and while in the beginning it seemed like it was going back to its roots, in the end it ended up being just another daily grind (garrison quests).

Another thing that irks me is how the whole realm community thing is dead, since you can just queue for dungeons and not even talk to your group during the whole run.

I don't know... I feel like the magic is gone.

What about you? Why do you still play?

I know exactly what you mean. With MoP, once you hit max level there really wasn't anything for me to do except farm and do dailies. It felt like work, having to log in and harvest my vegetables and go to the same quests, kill the same things, day after day. I was never in a raiding guild (preferred to stay semi-casual) so when I got tired of that, I would either attempt titles and achievements or just make a new character. I never played during vanilla though. I only started once MoP was already a thing, so I don't have anything to compare it to. But just judging from end-game experience (Well, semi end-game because like I said I was never into extreme raiding) it does lose its magic after max level.

I haven't tried WoD yet, but I am about to reactive at the end of this month. Why? I'm not really sure actually. Part nostalgia, I miss the game and I want to see what it's like now (I've been off of it for about 5 months). Also partly because I just enjoy the environment, storyline and quests. It's also pretty amazing to pay $15 and get unlimited amounts of entertainment. I mean, going to the movie theater is like $15 just for me, and that's just for one movie.

But I'm with you on the realm community being dead...it's basically a joke. Between LFR and LFD and then add-ons that help you find groups it has no sense of community. I'm currently unguilded because the only guilds on my server that aren't hardcore guilds with mandatory raid attendance are dead.

Exactly! Once a game starts feeling more like a chore and less like a...*game* then you know something is wrong. I felt like I *had* to login every day just to complete those menial quests even when I didn't feel like it.

As for raiding, unless I was doing it with friends I found it meaningless. I didn't raid for the gear, but for the sense of accomplishment I got when we managed to down the bosses. All my friends quit when MoP came out though, so that was the end of it, and probably the reason I couldn't get into WoD either.

I think it's good that you're giving WoD a shot because it is much better than MoP. I enjoyed it for the months I played, but ended up unable to justify paying the subscription.

I think with anything, stuff just gets old and worn out if you do it long enough. WoW is kind of at that point for me, but I still enjoy getting on for a few hours a few times a week and raiding or playing 3s.

Actually being apart of a PVE guild that raids every week and goes for progression has kept me subbed to the game. I hadn't raided in a real guild since WoTLK really and its been fun playing that side of the game again.

It sounds like a private server might be better for you, for the nostalgia purposes. Those xpacs are probably better anyway :)

I have no idea why I still play. I guess I still find the game entertaining enough to warrant my time. WoD was a great expansion that brought some of the lost excitement back, too.

Oh? I never thought of that. How do private servers work anyway? Aren't they *gasps* illegal ?

I am running into the same problems right now with wod. Perhaps its because I have been playing for 8 years straight. I hold out hope however that Blizzard will introduce new content for max level toons in the future. It is still really fun to start new characters and try out different specs and such. have even been dabbling on the horde side from time to time. Shhhh just don't tell my guild. LOL!

Yeah, questing is boring, dungeons are boring, raids i never do. The only thing I care about is PVP, which I still enjoy very much; I am nearly constantly doing Arenas and the way character interfaces work is very appealing to me. If only the game could be geared more towards PVP I would be happy. The fact is, alot of what blizzard does to make the game seem longer is just by making anoying rules surrounding gearing up. For example having a "conquest cap" so that you are unable to buy all the gear you need straight away... TBH id be perfectly happy if you didnt need to level your characters up anymore and they started with full gear... Yup, id be happy if the game had no progression other than skill progression.

I still play because I have made friends in game that I converse and complete content with. The social aspect is a big part of it for me. Since I play more than one MMORPG there is always content in WoW for me to explore and I never get bored. Dividing my time between a few games keeps it from becoming a grind for me. I don't run into the dread and boredom when logging in that I got endgame when I only played one MMORPG.

The thing that kept me going the most were the people I had built memories with. Its sad that so many are gone from the Vanilla days. But I do have a few still around. Cataclysm destroyed our guild which was held together by a few really good people, we had some elitist jerks who were more so just there for loot from our raid. After Blizzard made it so 10man raids got the same equivalent gear as the 25man raid. POOF, lol no longer were they bound to put up with us. Our guild turned into 3 little sub guilds within itself. No one talking to one another and everyone just sticking to their own little clicks. Soooo my raid leader/guild leader had it and said "frick this, I'm out..." after countless efforts of trying to keep the guild a fun place to be. I quit when it happened to. Came back months later to see the guild was in its worst ways possible, but someone told me a few of the original (good) members had came back and transferred onto another server and rebuilt, so I switched and stayed with them.

So many memories of the glory days though =/. Its kinda sad to think about it, but I really do love the fellowship you get from creating those kids of memories and friendships with people. Even through an online game such as WoW.

I see a lot of people stop playing for various reasons. For me, when an aspect of the game that I used to enjoy does not catch my attention anymore I just look into trying other things. I used to enjoy PvP but recently I have had no inclination to play it. As a result I now raid a few nights a week which I am loving. I think it is important to look at the game and find things that you enjoy. The game has so much to offer that people do not realize.

I play it a lot less these days. I no longer have a subscription. However, that doesn't mean I have quit. It just means I am taking a break. Like all things in life, I will most likely go back to it one day when I feel like it.

It's a game that has a lot of different things to do, different achievements, etc. It's a fun game.

I find I am beginning to lose mojo in the game as well. It feels like I have done everything. When new content comes out I go through that because it's new and exciting but at the end of it I feel like I'm lost. There is still plenty to do in game but it does consist of a lot of grinding which can be a pain in the back end.

The thing is I think I miss the social aspect of the game. I do really enjoy the game itself but my guild and the group of friends I used to play with have moved on over time. After so many years of playing a game it gets stale and this will happen. But I feel like I am not ready to give it up yet, but I do miss the chatting and having someone to do something with that I am familiar with. I think the major reason I still keep up with it is because I feel like I have invested so much time and energy into this game over the years that to quit now feels almost like it was a waste, and that idea drives me nuts.

These days, I mostly play for the lore. I recently discovered that I am a true sucker for lore, after ignoring it for years, in which I only played PVP and ran dungeons for quick level-ups. I think that the Warcraft universe has a really cool and expansive lore, and that fascinates me.

I don't play a whole lot nowadays, but what keeps me from leaving are my guild buddies because they are some really cool guys. Although I don't see us keeping much contact if I ever decided to quit, because it's happened before. Plus I think PVP can be pretty fun from time to time.

I still very rarely log in.. because it is free. I had so much gold from WOTLK, that now I can play for free for years. to me, the game is a chore now. All advancement and sense of achievement is so organized, regulated and throttled, that everything you do seems like just a small, meaningless stop towards a little advancement.

I had so much hope for WoD and Garrisons, but they totally blew it by having so many followers, and then forcing you to only play 25. Just too many artificial restrictions that limit any type of excitement. You accomplish exactly the same small amount as everyone else, and nothing you can do gets you above that.

I don't play it as much as I used to in the past, but I still do. Why? Because all of the memories, and all the years I have been playing it. I think that it's too hard to just leave this, and don't play anymore, it isn't easy.

I don't play WoW nearly as much as I used to just because I became bored of it. The only reason I still log in from time to time is to spend some time with my friends that are overseas since we started playing this game together, at the same time! :D

I don't play WoW that much anymore, and it's clearly not on the official servers... I mostly play it on the private ones. What you'd call, "custom" servers. I don't find it that great anymore and it's become quite obsolete, but hey... what's old's gold.

I just started playing WoW again actually. I think I'm just having nostalgic feelings towards the game. I used to play this all the time and then just stopped playing altogether for awhile because i got into Runescape. The game is still good but doesn't excite me like before. Maybe this is part of growing up? I generally don't play as much as i used to nowadays anyways.
