Why is ghost visibility reversed from 2033?

In Metro 2033 ghosts would show up if you shined light on them, which was a very cool shadow effect and made sense in protecting yourself with light.

In Last Light ghosts only show up if you DON'T shine light on them, making them harder to look at and enjoy. Why the switch?

Probably to make ghosts scarier. If you want to see them, you'll have to see them in the scary darkness, while if you don't want to see them, simply keep your light on. :p

There are some ghost folktales in parts of the world that say that they can only be seen at the edges of your vision, but never if you try to look directly at them; or that they can kill you if you open yourself up to them by paying them too much attention.

    That was my rationale anyway.

I thought a bigger contradiction was that Khan said that no man or beast would live in the cursed tunnel with ghosts in 2033, but mutants are right amongst ghosts in LL. I could see it as plausible in the... (spoiler)

catacombs level, where you could argue that it is a holy, sanctified place that counters any evil influence of ghosts; but the Red Square level has both dangerous ghosts and mutants.

That happened in 2033 too: at Cursed station, the shrine at the end has a bunch of ghosts in front of it, and mutants are running around there, as well as humans.

I kinda like the new ghosts actually. It's like you try to look at them but can't.. but you keep trying :p
