Why so many MMOs disappoint?

I have played so many MMOs lately, but most of the games I played were downright disappointing. Let me start with Guild Wars 2 here; they were hyping it up to be the next big thing, but it turned out that this game was nothing more than an average game. It was just another MMORPG IMHO. Why MMOs tend to disappoint?

He he I too was wondering this just a few days back. You know what, I think these days many developers jump on the bandwagon of creating MMOs just to make a few quick bucks off of unsuspecting consumers failing to provide the quality content that they're supposed to give.

I don't mind paying for a good MMO however I expect to see good content and a sort of good vibes from the game, otherwise it's just not worth it.

I think the main reason why most MMO's disappoint is that the fact that the story is never ending so it seems like a waste of time also another huge problem is that most MMO's seem to similar to one another their is no originality so it feels like you played one you have played them all.

Yes, I concur. I have always been a fan of SP games as I prefer to have an end to any game rather than continually playing it. Having said that, I am looking forward to games like, The Division, The Crew and Destiny.

Because, like you said, they are all average MMO's - the same as each other. A new MMO comes out and they try and change the story line (which is still practically the same) and they add content which is the same as any other but they give it a different name! Producers are too lazy to really think and take time to produce something different, and instead all we end up with is a game we have played plenty of times before but in multiple forms.

True. And the real reason that they disappoint is because even if we already know everything you said above, we still think that the next big game will change all that and be revolutionary. We are just expecting too much.

Yeah, but those days are numbered when devs used to succeed with WoW like RPGs. You need to work harder and grab people's attention now.

I think today's gamers want the quick thrill and success that comes with texting, instant messaging, and mobile gaming. MMOs are about the long haul. It's about sitting in your computer chair for 12 hours a day and not giving up until you've accomplished your goals, your friends' goals, and those randoms that you meet along the way.

I think the main reason is that the age of MMOs is gone now. Atleast the old school MMOs which require us to grind and grind. There are just so much variety in games now that no one finds grinding appealling anymore.

Today the closest games to old school MMOs are LoL probably. Other than that most people who would have played MMOs in the past are busy playing the various FPS online.

Well, you see, a lot of new game companies that are starting up are trying to release games that attract a specific player base or niche. The age of MMORPG has been out long enough now that a lot of ideas have already been thrown in to several games and there just isn't much left different enough to differentiate a good game with a bad game. Many elements are similar nowadays and really it can be said that game x is copying game y and vice versa. It's up to the player to decide which one is fun to play for them, not really the developer's choice or fault.

I think that a lot of them have failed because of the perks you can gain if you pay for the extra services or items. Of course, the person who doesn't pay, tends to get screwed and stops playing the game. Then you have the issue of content. A lot of them seem to fall back on each other and a few lack a lot of originality. The you have the new gamers who don't want to put in the time and dedication needed for some of the old fashioned MMORPGS. They want to finish quickly and have nothing but rills and excitement. Some care even less about the storylines.

Try out unique games. I was in a similar situation where every MMORPG I tried was disappointing because it felt like I was just doing the same thing as any other MMORPG, but I started EVE Online and it's a huge refresher for me, because it's just so different from anything I've tried before that I genuinely enjoy playing it the most out of any other game I've played before.

They haven't really been innovating at all and that's why. Alot of us MMO players have seen most of the mechanics they try and pass off as "new" and go back to the game we were playing before. The MMO scene needs massive innovation for a game to be successful. That's what the problem is.

I think that most MMOs try to be like WoW these days, and if they're just going to try to copy the king, then most of the time they end up being worse than what they're trying to copy. Otherwise, I think that MMOs are probably one of the most difficult types of games to design. You have to sacrifice a lot of things like story and gameplay in order to make the MMO part work.

That's because they are not making games for gamers to enjoy, they are making games for gamers to pay. The days where developers create games out of passion are slowly fading away. MMOs are so popular these days they just want to jump on the money making bandwagon to grab a piece of the pie.

They probably disappoint people because each MMO that comes out has the same promise. "We're the different ones", "we're doing x and y that nobody else is doing", etc.

When in truth, once the dust settles most of the MMO games are way too similar to each other with minimal differences.

People always get disappointed because they expect MMO's to be the best game they've played and they want it to be a game they can play for years and spend multiple hours a day on. When they realise this is a truly hard accomplishment for any game developer, big budgets or not, they get frustrated and angry at the game and stress there thoughts on these forums! They are extremely difficult games to create, and to please everyone is impossible.

MMO's are hard to diversify. It's a genre where everything is explored to the maximum, so coming up with something original is very difficult.

That's very true. But that's all the more reason some of the developers have to stop constantly preaching that their game is THE game that's different. And instead of sticking to what's safe, some of the developers need to actually be daring when they make their MMO games.

Only then will you see any chance of innovation in the genre.

Same reason why a lot of things in life are disappointing. It's getting better though with technological advancements. Games like Blade and Soul, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Black Desert, etc... look very promising, and will force game devs. to step their game up if they want their material to stay relevant.
