Why the long development cycle?

Diablo 3 took quite a long time to come out. I remember many E3's when people expected to hear news about a new Diablo, but when nothing came, people just stuck with Diablo 2. I know the game took a while because they were trying to perfect it, but in the end, it wasn't a perfect game. It had it's pros and cons, but in the end many people went right back to Diablo 2. Why do you think that is?

It's no were near as bad as say, Duke Nukem Forever, but it wasn't what I expected.

What do you guys think? Why did it take so long to develop?

Not sure the exact reasons behind it, but it is a strange one. Usually when games are delayed it's for the better, and the publishers are polishing things off and ironing out any bugs that the beta testers picked up. Maybe they just never listened to their fans?

They could be working slowly for a few reasons. They could be good or bad reasons. If they are good, the game will be well thought out and playable, the bad, the game will be absolutely terrible

It's a catch-22 situation. They have to delay the game release to get it right but all that does is increase people's expectation of the game. When they finally release, everybody inevitably finds it a bit of a let down and that's the game gone.

I believe it is all done to increase the hype around the game and the anticipation from the fans. They managed to do that but they increased the expectations from the game. When I bought the game the first day of its release, I was expecting a true masterpiece but they let me down. I ended the game once in the normal difficulty and then you had to do it over and over again for no real reason making it boring. I was expecting something better...

Blizzard is known for taking a lot of time when developing its games. I think the main reason is deep concepts and the work they put into the game. The hype factor is also there but I think that's just a result of the time and effort Blizzard puts into game development. Think about it, Blizzard hasn't released a game that didn't dominate among it's peers since Warcraft 1.

As Alfonso has mentioned, game developers like Blizzard take a longer time to develop their games primarily to put emphasize on design and production. "Hype" is a socially generated ideal and is often the result of heavily promoted games still in development which also unfortunately has a negative side effect. That side effect is that people can get so pumped up about it, that when the game is finally released, it may not meet expectations.
