Before you consider playing this game, please note that it has the worst gaming community of any MMO ever made.
I'd say I'm insulted, at minimum, in one out of three games I play. The name calling opportunities begin at lane selection, and continue throughout the game.
The players are whiny little scumbags. I'm guessing they're mostly children. But, however you cut it, it's the must toxic, god-awful crowd of jerks I've ever encountered in any game (I started playing MMOs 12 years ago, as well as FPSs, so this is saying something).
If you like decent people, don't play this game.

While yes I can attest, there are trolls everywhere. It had gotten worse with how viral and mainstream the game as become. More and more players come in thinking they are Faker when yet... they are in silver 4 and struggling xD. But people are people, there are ways to make those "scumbags" pay for acting that way. Riot throws out chat bans and game time bans, like its no one's business. As you can always simply, instantly and very easily mute the player that is being toxic. As toxicity will not likely help your team win anyways. As you play and perform better, winning more, your elo increases, thusly flushing out and removing you from the lower bottom dwellers of trollville xD.

I can't say it isn't absolutely horrible for community (because it is) but a PVP oriented game where the goal is to kill the other players always spawn hatred and trolls and foul languages (See Also: Heroes of Newerth, DOTA, DOTA2) - Any MOBA is/generally has a horrible community. Especially if you randomly queue with a bunch of people you don't know and then do horrible you will get called a long list of expletives and then probably reported just for the fun of it even if you did nothing wrong.

Why? Because people playing these games tend to have the "I'm better than you" syndrome and take it the extremes. Again, present in any MOBA. I've ran into no matter which MOBA you decided to go to.

Now on the other hand, I've also met plenty of cool people who are even still on my friends list, so you just can't let those people in those games you played give you a whole "Feeling" of how the community is. I've been a player since LoL BETA and I can attest that there is equal number of nice people for all those whiny little douchebags out there. I'm just sorry you experienced what you did and it turned you off, because these series of games are legit fun.

If you just want to play an enjoy it, disable chat altogether. Turn off cross channel chat and ignore team chat. Just play the game. I make this suggestion to all the people I play/see with this exact same problem because they're just trying to goad you to get you all pissy so you'll perform worse against so they look better and can troll you more. My advice? Just shut up, no typing, and prove your worth with how you do in game. Poop all over the enemy team. Teabag emote them back. But just don't rise to typing back or you're just feeding the trolls.

And the trolls get ever so hungry.

My experience has been similar to yours. In my first 'live' game I asked a few simple questions and within a couple minutes I just left the match. It was that bad. One person was trying to answer my questions and help out, but he(she?) got insulted vehemently as well. I have not played since.

I recommend DOTA2, but keep in mind that community there is only a wee bit better. At least if you are winning people are bearable.

I have played League since beta, off and on. The community HAS gotten worse over time, but that's bound to happen with the increase of player base. This also depends on your region as well. I find that toxcity levels rise based around stressful times for peopole at school and during holiday's/ vacations. My advice to anyone reading this is to just mute everyone and play the game, don't let other people determined the fun you'll have.

Pretty much all Moba have horrible communities. It's the mentality that they'll probably never see you again, so why be nice?

^That's pretty much the internet mentality for most people that are jerks, that's for sure. So you are definitely right.

I find that it really does depend on the kind of games. If you play vs bots most people are nice and very helpful. This is is especially true of the nonclassic formats. But in classic vs people, every team does seem to have a rager. The best approach is to make friends and play with them. Once you get a good group of people it becomes a lot of fun.

MOBA's aren't MMO's so there is no community. If your team is not meeting a certain player's expectations, they often go into a nerd rage and tell everyone off. Chances are, it's a 15 year kid who thinks he's amazing at said MOBA but for whatever reason is still doing random matches without a team.

I used to play a lot of Smite and found that the best way to deal with these types of people was to kill them with kindness. They typically don't know how to react to this tactic and will often just STFU or in some cases they will actually realize how stupid they were acting and take it down a notch.

I won't lie, League of Legends does have a pretty bad community. I just played a game in ranked with some other Platinum level players. Man, it was terrible. This guy trolled so hard with Le Blanc mid. Every level of LoL, there are trolls.

I've had a similar experience in various MOBAs which suggests they attract a specific type of players - the kind that need instant gratification and lack the patience needed for more advanced MMORPG

e.g. i only started playing Dawngate and had players say some aweful crap for dying a little too many times

I just play like DUNKEY does and "I give no fucks" and just laugh while I play - sometimes I'll feed those community trolls, but sometimes not. Sometimes I'll kill them with kindness, some times I'll tell them off for a crappy attitude and block them.

This is universal in games of this MOBA standing. Just going to happen. On the flipside, I've seen a lot of DOTA 2 people be MORE horrible then anyone I've met on LOL. The rage there is nearly unbearable if you're a new player and don't know how to build, where things are located, how to deny, etc. You'll get pooped on and then ignored by everyone.

I used to worry about always getting trolled and insulted, too, but now it's not the case anymore since Riot implemented a new system which instantly bans those who don't bring any fruition to the overall games they play. And, no, it's not only 1 or 2 days, it's 2 entire months!!! My recommendation is to look forward to playing this game again since it's becoming more and more player-focused.
