Would Minecraft have been successful in the 90s or early 200s?

Here's an interesting question. Do you think Minecraft would have found the same amount of success it enjoys today if it had been released in the 1990s or the early 2000s? I can't say yes for sure, but I want to hear your opinions.

It wouldn't necessarily be the same, I think it'd be even more popular, it would've just blown up since the gaming industry wasn't as advanced as it is today.

I think it wouldn't have been very popular back then. Nowadays, a majority of people can afford a computer and Minecraft.

Well, I don't see why it wouldn't be, quite frankly. The computers would have to be much more powerful to be able to run it smoothly. But if they were, people would still enjoy it, for the same reasons millions of users love it in 2014.

I don't think it would be exactly the same as it is now, with all of its features and so forth but I think it would have been become pretty popular fairly quickly.

Yes, definitely. Sandbox games weren't so popular back then. Plus it wouldn't have people saying "Oh my god, look at that game with crappy graphics," and they could actually see how good the game is.

Probably not, because most games haven't been made back then, so a lot of things are original. Minecraft is popular because of its originality.

Yeah, but it would have been closer to what minecraft classic was because of the constraints of hardware back then..

Yeah, but the quality of computers wasn't as good so it wouldn't be as advanced.

I don't think that computers are even that capable back then. The game might be Minecraft but it certainly won't be the game we're seeing right now. Although Minecraft looks dated but it's architecture is way more advance than what the 90s and early 2000s can do.

I think it would be a big hit. The 90's where the golden age of video games (or was it the 80's?) and having a game like Minecraft would probably be a big success, I mean it's the dawn of the 3D era and every game is transitioning into 3D. Most of the games back then where either plat former games or shooting games so having a game where you have to mine and craft things to make it useful is very unique for that time period. But I think the graphics will not stand out as much though since the look Minecraft is trying to achieve is that sort of retro feel of pixels and blocks which at the time of the 90's is a pretty common site among all video games.

I don't think it would either. Nobody really wanted a computer back then, let alone some dinky video game where you build with blocks. :)

Ha, I'm sure a lot of people would rather play with real life building blocks or something.

Yeah I think it will be a huge hit, but I don't the computers back in the 90's can even handle Minecraft, I mean the game involves calculating and creating an infinite world so before it can even load a single texure your computer would probably be frozen. But yeah I say it would be a huge hit.

If it had the same graphics as now, and somehow was able to be run well on the computers from back then, then it would've been even more popular because its graphics would be much higher. If the graphics were dumbed down to where it would actually be compatible with computers back then, it wouldn't be nearly as popular as now because there weren't forms of social media such as youtube to publicize it so easily.

Back then. Blocky games were the agenda. They wouldn't be as popular as they are now. Minecraft is a unique game nowadays.

Well I think part of minecraft charm is the faux old school graphics that emulate the era in which games were pixelated but also adds a 3d environment in the mix and its just an awesome stylistic combination that really works for the game's purposes. Though I really would enjoy some more HD graphics and maybe a change from the java engine. I think that is something that might happen in the future, now with Microsoft in control of everything. They have the budget and the resource to make it happen.

I don't think java was as popular back then, so maybe the game would have been written in something good :p

I think it will not be as popular as now if Minecraft released this game decades ago. The graphics which Minecraft have is very unique for a first person shooter it what makes Minecraft popular this days.
