Yeah it's just a theory. But, its mechanism is pretty much the same as an erruption of volcano. - 1816, Year Without a Summer caused by a volcano.

Let's say you are coming from a work by a car and a radio has just announced that USA declares unlimited nuclear war to its main enemies. What would be the first steps you would take to survive the upcoming Nuclear winter?

I'm really considering moving myself to Moscow, very close to Metro (so it would be possible for me to walk there any time). I'd create myself a complex plan and try to make some improvisational steps in it (the What if... questions and answers for them).

    What about you?

If I had to make a decision right then and there in the car I'd have to say I'd head to my families cabin about an hours drive from work to get away immediately from such a likely target as Winnipeg. There's plenty of wood and food stored there already to Huallaga through the winter. Once there I suppose I'd just wait and see what develops. If it's not good then a living can easily be carved out at the lake. Plenty of hunting, fishing and close outdoor friends to band with. Almost everyone I know out there has at least a 12 guage or .22lr for hunting and sport. A lot of natives live there too that have lived off the land for generations.

Of course that's just one scenario not taking into account any of the possible affects that could happen in a nuclear war like radiation or water contamination and such. But yeah, that's my first thought as I write it.

Well, I have already taken them into my account that's why I'd be living underground. But I've seen this article even before your post and there were islands among these top 10 places to survive nuclear winter on.

    You're not alone.

  7. I'm not going to do anything since my city is one of the bigger targets and doesn't have an extensive missile defence like Moscow does.

Under current Civil Defence rules I won't be able to reach subway in time either.

I was thinking more about this. Even though my home town would probably be one of the first to get obliterated, there would still be tons and tons of fallout to deal with. Since I live in a desert city and the surrounding area of at least for a 100 miles diameter is desert, the impact/explosion of the ICBM would pick up so much dirt, it would probably block out the sun over the city for a while. On the plus side, if it were to happen during the spring or fall (windy seasons) all the fallout would blow elsewhere :D.

Other than that, If I was given a few hours notice of an attack, I would drive to a near by cave that's only a couple hours away, hope that I would survive long enough to surface, and live in a metro type world.

I'd just go home and wait it out.
But if I was 100% certain the capital in Norway was gonna get nuked, I guess I'd take my car up North, as far away from the most civilized side of the country. ('Cause almost everyone lives in the south). I'd try to bring friends and family along as well, maybe end up finding some cabin and survive up there. And that's it. :noidea:

I dunno, it depends on how liberally my country gets nuked. I live right next to my state's capitol, but we're all the way up North; the closest major city we have is Chicago, and they're over 100 miles away. If our hypothetical nuker decides that they want to wipe us all out, then I'd probably quickly pack some supplies and head as far north as I could. But if it's more along the lines of 20 nukes or so just heading for the major cities, I'd just turn off the AC, stay in the basement, and see about getting some spare water/power set up if I have the time.

I don't know dude. You live live in the US and like it or not most of the world doesn't exactly "Love you like a bush of roses". If any place is gunna get nuked into oblivion it's probably the US, Britain, Germany and Russia.
