You can change your name very soon!

It's about time. I never understood why developers use usernames as the primary ID. Primary ID's should be based off email addresses, assigned a database ID #, so people can change front-end aliases.

 

I totally agree, i hate not being able to change your display name in a game in someway. It also would be good for Youtubers and Twitch celebrities so that they are not being harassed and stalked.

 

I'm with you on this one. All games should be allowed to change names. I always thought that it was a stupid idea too. They already use e-mail for logins so why can't we change our usernames. Well, at least Minecraft is doing it and that's a start.

 

I do think that there should be a safeguard though. A lot of people get banned from servers, and that uses the persons username. So there will need to be a way to track that person in a different way to make sure they cannot just change their name and gain access to your server again.

 

Can someone clear up what name changing means? Will we have to change our name a username that isn't currently in use? Or will the system more be like Steam with a primary username and the ability to change our 'alias' at will?

 

If your in-game MC name is MPTurner, you will continue to be able to use that name. However, let's say you're sick of that name some months later, then you can go to the Minecraft website and change your alias to MPTurnip or MyNameIsGreat or whatever you want, so long as no one else has that name.

 

I agree that this will open up room for exploits in terms of what you mentioned. I wouldn't worry about it though, since they are allowing it I think they must have got that part covered.

 

I think the reason why games use this kind of precaution is because if the user base gets too big, then the supply of usernames begins to dwindle. Obviously the number of usernames is infinite because we can use so many different characters, but it does limit our use of the language.

 

Thanks for clearing that up. I think that would be great, after a few years I think it would be nice to change my name. People who role play could change their name depending on the server they are on or change it depending on their 'role' being given titles.

 

Wow! That's a surprise. I didn't know that it will happen. I'm really happy that it will, though. I always wanted to change my Minecraft name. I always got bored of it. I wanted a new, more unique one. And now, I will be able to do that!

 

I can see why people are excited about being able to change their name - sometimes you just want a change! Especially if you chose your name during a moment of poor judgement and regret it now.

 

This is something i have wanted for a while! Need to change my name! I regret choosing the one i did, sounds very childish. Non the less, they keep making this game better!

 

I like that. I wanted to change the name because me and my brother share an account and the name on their is not that great.

 

I've been wanting to change it for a while... My username ended up being my name as i'm an idiot. Just purely 100% a mistake kind of limited me playing online. Good to know it won't be for long.

 

I know how you feel. One quick Google of my name and you see tons of things I regret signing up for!

 

Yeah, I don't like my real name on the internet. My new handle is Karl Marx. Anonymity is key here the less hits for the true me when searching my name is for the best.

 

Yay! , finally. I've been waiting for this news for years. Why has it taken this long?. Do you think it's because of problems with the early code?. I'm just glad the option is nearly here.

 

That's great news! I'm surprised that it has taken this long to add this option in. I personally do not wish to change my name, it's the name I use for pretty much everything, but I can understand the need for it and I can understand why people are excited about it. Sometimes a change can be a good thing!

 

I'm excited! It's always good to be able to change your name, just because you feel like it. Better to have your account tied to an ID, kinda like Warcraft does.
