Your opinions on no level cap?

Recently it has been announced that there won't be a level cap for Fallout 4.
Now I can't quite imagine how this would work, will your character just gets infinitely stronger, until it's way past OP?
Or perhaps the skills will still have a cap and only the level number will keep increasing.

That is crazy, just imagine how strong you will be worth every skill maxed out. I bet they will have some way of holding the player back, like you said just the number increases.

I love the idea because level caps bug me due to how I can never build that perfect character with everything maxed out. However, I'm also a little worried because if levelling up only gets harder and harder with each level, then at some point, we'll reach MMORPG levels of grind and it won't be fun anymore.

Skyrim was sort of similar, where it was an instance where, once you reached the higher levels, leveling up became very difficult. While I think that removing the level cap may improve the depth of a single game, it could remove replay value by allowing players to experience essentially the entire game in a single save file.

I'm excited by the idea, honestly. A lot of these level caps in all these games seem pretty arbitrary to me at times. And yeah, Skyrim's leveling system worked very well, perhaps my favorite RPG leveling system of all time. And at that time Bethesda released new content for higher level players at fairly decent intervals, so I think it'll work fine.

Enemies are just going to scale in difficulty as you level up, so it's not exactly a problem.

I don't mind his since I don't have to have mini debates in my head on what one perk to get over another since I was limited to a few. Besides, as long as I can blow stuff up and the enemies give me a decent challenge, I will be happy.

They must have a new scale mechanic in place, otherwise this is a pretty crazy idea and I think it's going to be pretty op. You're just going to get out of control past a certain point.

Most games scale enemies with the player's skill in order to make it competitive rather than a complete joke. I'm pretty sure that was implemented in Skyrim, although Fallout 3 and New Vegas had a difficulty setting, if I remember correctly. I don't know.

I do know that most games without a set difficulty do scale with players.

I honestly don't mind it. I like the fact that we have this sort of freedom from the get-go. In Fallout 3 the leveling system was not really ideal. I think I'd reached the top level way before finishing the game, so while I liked exploring the world of FO3, that extra incentive to level up in order to get perks wasn't there anymore.

As most of you said, I just hope we won't end up being OP and that there is still some sort of a challenge. At the other end of the spectrum though, it hopefully won't be like Oblivion where it felt like leveling up didn't really matter since the enemies leveled up with you.

This is what I'm afraid of. The enemies leveling up with your characters didn't work out that well neither in Oblivion or Skyrim - at higher levels it was ridiculous to see common bandits wearing legendary armors that lore-wise should be far beyond their reach.

On it's own I think it would definitely present a problem, but as long as they do scale up the monsters and stop the strength levels from rising at some point, I think it'll be awesome! It'll be good to get a chance to get all the perks, if they do it that way.

Well at some point it has to be so hard to level up it wouldn't really matter, like a natural level cap kind of.

The Witcher 3 also didn't have a level cap as well, but theoretically there has to be a soft cap, right? As long as there's still tons of sidequests and it's not mindless XP, I totally love not having a level cap.

I think this approach could be fun, but I hope that we still feel challenged when we reach insanely high levels. Once I reach a level cap, I tend to stop playing a game. Without a cap, I feel like I will be able to play this game for much longer - which to me, is fantastic!

I really like it actually. It provides the game with more of a challenge and after you beat it, you really do need something extra. In my opinion, Fallout 4 really delivered everything I wanted.

I usually restart when my character gets overpowered so I pretty much never hit the level cap anyway, but the option to keep leveling is still nice. Though I wonder if the enemy scaling makes the whole process worth it.

I think having no level cap is a way to add replayability to the game. I would imagine that Betheseda might release some content in the future with very high skill requirements.
