Well in another thread when someone asked what genre you think could make a good MMORPG which hasn't been done yet. He/she got me thinking. One of the new idea I just came up was a zombie apocalypse based MMORPG.

Think about it, the "zombie culture" is strong. There are so many movies and video games about zombies.
Games example: Resident evil (Biohazard) series; Left 4 Dead
Movies and TV series examples: Resident Evil (nothing like the game storyline lolz); The Walking Dead, World War Z, etc.

There has to be some way to make a perfect MMORPG based on zombies.

Players can choose to be humans and special zombies. Examples of special zombies can be found in Left 4 Dead. Amongst all the regular human zombies, there are mutated zombies called Boomer, Smoker, Hunter, and Tank in Left 4 Dead. In the multiplay mode, there is "Versus" where 4 vs 4. Both sides rotate to be humans and zombies to go through each map. It was fun to play as special zombies as well as fun to play as players with guns.

In a MMORPG setting, not only players can choose to be special zombies and humans... even amongst the humans people should be able to choose factions, or simply make the game free for all to let players to form their own clans/groups. Humans should be able to fight against other humans too. Just take a look at The Walking Dead. Many different groups were fighting for resources, shelters, as well as "power" and "control".
In Resident Evil game series, the storyline was awesome. Main characters not only had to fight against zombies in order to survive, they also had to fight against the special bio-weapons created by Umbrella Corporations which were sent to track them down. ex: Tyrant. There were also Umbrella special forces, operatives, spies throughout the games who were working to obtain either virus samples, or combat data, etc.

Think about it. Players can form groups to hold out at certain hideouts. Set the game up so players' characters actually need shelter and food/water/medicines in order to survive. That will force different groups to go out of their shelters once in a while to search for resources, and it might force them to fight each other for whatever leftover they can scrap. Zombie players can form groups to either ambush the humans who came out of the hiding, or even amass large enough groups try to overrun human strongholds. Humans can also try to overrun other humans' strongholds to claim them as their own. It will have tons of large scaled group fighting!

    What do you think? :p

I thought they are making one called H1Z1 right? I think it's in beta right now. Didn't get into it myself but I heard that it's not bad. I've seen some videos on it and kind of reminds me of Minecraft in a way.

Well, you have DayZ, I've been playing it and it's awesome! I don't think we can classify it as an MMORPG, but there's zombies on it. haha

The developer of State of Decay said they would make a MMORPG version of the game if State of Decay is a success. After the release June 2013, they sold 250,000 copies within the first 48 hours, and by November they sold more than 1 million copies. I would call it a success.

It will be the first zombie MMORPG, and it will be called "Class 4".

For those people who do not know State of Decay, it was originally created for Xbox One, but ported to PC shortly. It is now on sale for only about $7 on Steam. The game is singleplay but with an open world to allow the player to do whatever he/she wish. The game receives pretty good rating, and lets hope Class 4 will be good too! For one thing, State of Decay is a third person game, I really hope the MMORPG version has a first person mode. I always believe First Person shooting is where the skill at lol.

Yeah, I've seen State of Decay. My friends said that the game is pretty good. I never played it myself since I'm getting tired of all this post-apocalyptic scenario thing. I never knew it is for Xbox One, I thought it is for the Xbox 360 only.

My mistake. It was for Xbox 360 before ported over to PC.
I do not own any Xbox so I was a little confused haha. I am a hardcore PC gamer. :)

From what I heard, it said that the co-creator of World of Warcraft Jeff Strain had a hand in the game of State of Decay. It was him who wanted the game to be designed in a way that each individual player can have their own way of survival. If Jeff Strain is indeed on the case, then they should have had plenty of experience in MMORPG... at least I hope so.

I'd love to see a proper zombie MMO but I'm not sure it will actually happen.. besides the zombie thing seems to be dying down right now..

I don't think the "zombie thing" is dying down at all.In fact I believe it is getting hotter.

Just take a look at how popular and highly rated The Walking Dead TV series is. Also earlier this year they released that World War Z movie (although the movie wasn't rated very high).

I hope Class 4 will please us lol.

Really? Less and less games are coming out full of zombies and yes, walking dead is popular and remains popular but that's one example and World War Z was terrible..
but that's just what I'VE observed..

There weren't that many zombie games to begin with. What I see is more zombie games than ever.

Even the apps on mobile devices are full of zombies.

WWZ wasn't awesome enough for sure, but that's just a rating for that specific movie. Zombie influence is strong and it will be that way for a long time. The Walking Dead is popular = the proof that zombies are popular.

A nice Zombie MMO would be really cool. I would play that game day in and day out really. I would hope that it comes with a great story line and characters though. I like the Walking Dead series haha and it is still popular as we speak in my opinion it is just not many use them in their games, because I think you just have to know how to incorporate them so the game will be decent.

    @ Lucky210,
Usually MMORPGs lack in the "storyline" lol. With so many players on each server, what can the story be? Usually they just have mindless "quests" to make players running around to kill 10 this, kill 10 that, then deliver this, and deliver that lolz. I hope our first zombie MMO won't be like that.

I would rather have the game focused on survival and PvP than mindless quests. All PvP focused games have a lot of replay value thus will keep the players entertained for a long time. Of course, the best course of action would be letting the players to do whatever they want. Let the world to run its own course. Let the finest/smartest/and perhaps the most ruthless will survive haha!

I need to expand the latest line of my previous post a little further.
I think allow the servers to run its course almost unsupervised would be great for such zombie apocalypse scenario. Aside hacking/exploiting/or using unacceptable languages, I don't think moderators need to interfere in anything else what the players do. I remember in Lineage 2 during the initial stage so many players reported to mods "I got pked!" It was funny... after all it was an open PvP game. Players were also free to form any kind of group, clan, alliance, etc. as they please. Even scam were not interfered with... (There were scammers in the game sell worthless gemstones as something else worth 20x the price. There were crafters who would take the money and the material then disappear...etc.). The mods were just telling everyone who reported "It is a part of the game" lol... Although I didn't approve that in Lineage 2, but I think for a survival of the finest game, it is acceptable. All the bullying, looting, killing, conspiracies, scamming are acceptable in a game which is about how to survive the end of the world. :p

    What do you guys think?

I think Day Z pretty much classified as a "Zombie MMO". It's not in a ton of detail right now and there isn't a whole lot to the game, but the basis is there already. A more in-depth Zombie MMO worth more to do would be a cool idea though. I like the basis that you outlined in a few of your posts.

There is already a couple of them out there. It all started with The Secret World, an under appreciated game. Ad then came the DayZ which was an instant hit. We all know the story after that.

Yes, I have tried State of /decay at a friends house and the gameplay was actually really good. The game offered a very realistic version of what would happen, like the characters around you shows signs of aging and if they die, they'll turn into zombified versions of themselves, which I really liked about the game.

Show sign of aging so quickly? Wow, zombie apocalypse must be really stressful for the survivors... LOL. In reality, it will take at least many months to see any sign of aging.

By the way, do all of the dead characters in State of Decay turn into zombies? Or just the ones who were bitten?

Hey man, getting chased by zombies and eating canned food can really take it's toll on your health.

If you'd like to count DayZ as an MMORPG, then it is absolutely the best zombie apocalypse MMORPG you could get, in my opinion. Within a week, it climbed the ladder to my most played Steam game, which took months for most of them. It's absolutely amazing and unique and I'd really recommend it to anyone.
