This was somewhat realized with APB if only it didn't fail so hard. GTA Online is a step forward but isn't really a full fledged MMO. Eventually, however, I think Rockstar will release something full scale that really reflects a true MMO.

I'm pretty sure we will see one in the upcoming years, this is a huge cash grab if done right. A modern real-life MMO based on GTA would absolutely rock! Afterall many of us are tired of swords&sorcery or blaster/sci-fi games so this will be refreshing.

When RockStar comes out with one I think they will probably break another record. They always tend to make enjoyable games. Never been disappointed and I think a lot of people hold their games to a standard.

They made a pretty great one a few years ago for San Andreas. You could chose your career (weapons builder, cop, armor builder, drug dealer....). I always chose weapons dealer because they seemed to make the most steady money. You searched out materials for the weapons, went to your garage and built whatever guns you could, all while avoiding the cops. If you got busted you went to jail for a certain amount of time, depending on how severe your charges were.
Each server had around 250 people on it at a time.
    The game was a blast.

I don't think this is a good idea.
GTA doesn't have classes, races, talents or anything like that. Even if they tried to implement those mechanics to a game like GTA it would feel too weird. I guess GTA Online is the closest we'll ever get to a GTA MMO.

A massive game world would make GTA Online possible. While it's huge for a singleplayer storyline, it's not MMO huge - or even close.

I don't really think a GTA MMORPG would work better than regular multiplayer. Part of the fun is going on rampages and having lots of other players would probably make that more difficult. In addition, most MMOs have some kind of leveling system which wouldn't make too much sense in a game like GTA. I think having servers with 64-128 player support would give most of the benefits an MMO has without compromising what makes GTA so great int he first place.

I would piss myself with excitement. GTA V's online play is somewhat RPGish but not really. To see a GTA MMORPG on Next Gen consoles would be amazing. We'll see

San Andreas Multiplayer's RP servers are closest to that and some of the other crazy wild stunt servers are like that too. Just Cause 2 Multiplayer is alot like that too.

Just Cause 2's storyline is absolute garbage but the freeroaming aspect is one of the best... ever and it's a beautiful game. The multi-player mod just adds to that a million fold.

Yeah I played the single player and beat it. Thought it was really repetitive and lousy as shit. I'm gonna try the multiplayer if it's that good. It's rated really high apparently.
