That's true it's been proven that MMO's in general make the most money.

I don't think so. Even if it might seem so in the Western part of the world, the Asian countries are still massive MMO players. It's MUCH bigger there and I think they will keep playing for years to come.

Wow at the guy above me. I have no idea how you could possibly come up with the conclusion that video games are dying. Considering how much more widespread they are than they used to be, that's just straight up a failure in logic. I don't think MMOs are dying, but they have stagnated in creativity. Hopefully that will change with some of the new MMOs that are coming.

MMORPGs, perhaps are declining, but the concept of MMO is not dying at all, infact it's growing, and probably dominating the market as well. Just look at free to play massive models like LoL and DoTA.

The main problem with traditional MMO's is that the genre is stagnating. The big names(WoW, I am looking at you) have set up a standard of how the game should look like, and so all of the developers try to copy it, which leaves not much room and breathing space for innovation and such. Fresh ideas and more kickstarter-esque projects are needed, but I do have hope for the genre.

I don't know about you guys but MMO is actually the future of the gaming industry. It is becoming the bread and butter of most gaming franchises. We’ll see traditionally single-player games look to pilfer from the MMO genre in order to legitimize the need for an always online connection, where the game is tied to a player account rather than just a serial key. If what you think I'm saying is not true then just look at titles like Neverwinter Nights, Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy and Diablo just to name a few. These are games whose franchise were molded by their single player games, but because of the success of MMO genre, they decided to jump on the bandwagon. I wouldn't be surprises if we will be seeing a GTA online or Assassin's Creed online in the future. I’m not sure if it’ll work, but one thing is for sure, MMO is here to stay.

I don't think MMO's are dying at all. In fact, I would say that they've been increasing in popularity year after year and more people are playing them now that they've become more mainstream thanks to WoW. I'm really looking forward to playing Destiny and I think that game will create even more MMO fans.

I think by MMO you mean hotkey based MMORPGs, since new genres of MMOs typically have a live combat system and dynamic open worlds or have branched into various genres. WoW is still fairly popular, and will last for a while. The future will move away from hotkey based games and introduce newer concepts that weren't as feasible before.

Definitely not. There are so many new games being released and so many old ones that are still going strong.

I think MMO's will never die because people like playing online games and they like to meet new people and chat with them.

With f2p, MMO's have three paths to follow. Either lose market share to the free games. Move to a free model themselves. OR do what isn't being done and step up their game.
If the decision makers at Wow for example looked at lotro as "this is what the client gets for free" and modeled content based on "this is what we cam make the client want to pay for" rather than just more of the same thing we would surely see a resurgence in MMOs.
MMOs are not dead, but in a state of deep hibernation at the moment.

The MMO i am currently playing is dying. All the new updates have made the veterans hate the game. I think other MMO's are growing or staying the same.

Honestly I think the best answer to this question would be that it is a bit of both occuring, the game companies can churn out free 2 play games quickly and easily and without having to worry about losses due to a lack of subscriptions but at the same time appealing to those who would play pay to play games by having an ingame market with which they can buy items for real cash.

It is however a balancing act between good quality gameplay and their laziness when it comes to actually programming free games.

MMO fans are slowly decreasing as new genres are getting bigger. It's a repeating cycle.

Agreed it is just the way things go, the old makes way for the new.

I agree that only the WoW clones are dying. There will be a time when they boom again as people will get that classic MMO nostalgia. I am guilty of this with Vanilla WoW.
