So uh, anyone else kind of sad how few people still post here? Even when I want to post I'm not sure anyone will respond unless it's news of the next 4a game...

Well I haven't been here long enough to remember the golden days, and my posts are mainly restricted to the RP threads and occasionally elsewhere.
    Still it is rather sad

    Yes.

I've been online since 1994 and shrinking internet communities I am a part of still make me upset.

I made a website for my ESL team back in 2005 and the team disbanded in 2009 after we lost a race for the world championship and took a second place. A few people stuck around until 2011, but most left by that point. I assumed that the website will be deleted by the hosting due to inactivity, but later I've found out that it continued to exist through the years because spambots took over, creating infinite threads every day.

The hosting recently complained we had too much spam and deleted it with a 90 day notice. I decided not to stop it because I had no motivation to tend to a dead website, but it hurt so much to see something I've invested so much time and effort into disappear.

Of course. We don't post about the lack of activity that often because it's kind of run-of-the-mill for us now. :( It is obviously a huge shame how many of us have left. I can't help feeling a bit bitter when I see that our Steam group has 39 members whilst many fewer people visit this forum on a weekly basis, especially since I see many of the same people being very active on Steam, but at the same time I can't blame them for not coming here. Anyone who didn't feel particularly tied to this forum or feels there is nothing left to talk about (no new stuff from 4A) probably won't ever return until some big news from the Metro franchise happens in English. Just like with unions on GameSpot before they were deleted, anything that is created in anticipation of one game's release is destined to die sooner or later. And earlier I said news in English because there is loads to talk about in other languages with the Universe of Metro 2033 series still growing in Russia and several other countries, but unfortunately none of those novels have been published in English. Plus most of us spend more time playing games than reading books so there is that.

This reminds me of what happened with "unions" (user-created communities and boards, basically like mini-forums) on GameSpot. I used to have my own union years ago, which was around the time when we finally got an internet connection at my house (probably around 2006-2007), as well as being a member of several other ones; they were pretty grand as unions could be created for just about anyone and anything, they could be as off-topic as they wanted to or strictly about one game series/genre... but as always, these communities dwindled one-by-one, so I eventually started visiting less frequently too. Over time, whoever managed GameSpot decided it was a good idea to "modernise" the website and cool community-oriented features started disappearing, user pages turned into facebook-style "timelines". In 2013 they finally removed unions from the website entirely, effectively splitting the entire community and removing any reason for me to log on to the website (which at that point I did only once in a few months).

Thankfully, by then I was a user of the Metro forum for 2 years already, so when they destroyed what little was left of the internet communities I was part of, I had already fallen back here. I think I might actually log in at GameSpot one more time just to delete all my old blog posts.

EDIT: To cheer yous up, here is a great video that is probably about to go viral:

Greetings comrades and cumrags alike! I'm back for a visit from my most busy studies regarding why none of the other planets want to split the wifi bill with Pluto... I've some strong leads suggesting it stems from his constant Utorrent seeding when he's AFK... However I won't bore you with my studies instead I'll give you a round up of what has been going on with me so that you can stop worrying so much for my wellbeing.

I've graduated from my training in Gagetown, Newbrunswick as top Leopard 2 driver of the course and been stationed in CFB Edmonton which is in Alberta, much closer to home. I've settled into shacks shared with one roommate and together we have gotten a mini fridge, microwave and Internet to settle us in and are doing swell together. I am B squadron, 2 troop Alpha driver (Warrant officers tank driver). I've also gotten into airsoft here and have quite a few guys interested in it with me. My regiment even hosts a local big game every year called OP Valour which I intend to get involved in. I'll post some pics if it works
    for me!

You're actually saying you've been driving a real tank? Nice, man, I'm really jealous!
I'm also really jealous of the airsoft part, that would be real cool, I hope it works out. Good to hear you're doing so well on Pluto, desptie how cold it might be. Have you been in that big heart-crater by the way? :D

No, I have not been in the big heart of Pluto yet. As much as I've tried to beguile her into opening that big heart of hers I'm afraid that door is locked to me, the key of which lies entombed in an icy grip far from the reach of praying fools like me. I'm destined to forever search fruitlessly in unmerciful cold and pain for that which opens my salvation. More research is required...

Not only do I get to drive tanks everyday but on this Friday I get to crush a car for a family day crowd! My reward for winning my squadrons weekly stable parade by being the best dressed and presented, although won in the end by a good old fashioned push-up contest...

Dayum... that's gonna be pretty difficult, but if you graduate from that and they see it on your CV then you'll definitely be sought-after, so good luck. ;)
