You have to take into consideration that there are a lot of kids playing and their parents probably aren't going to pay a large sum of money for their games. Kids play games out of passion so they don't really care about wasted time.

In fairness, a lot of free-to-play model games actually make more money than ones that actually cost money. Usually in the form of advertising revenue or in-game purchases. Now of course, this isn't consistent of course through all types, but if you've ever checked out the numbers for the mobile market, it's especially true.

With that being said it's not really about what it costs vs. what it doesn't, it's about the quality of the game. In essence, no MMORPG should really charge as they already make plenty as it is at least off the ad revenue/in-game purchases/sponsorships so I wouldn't see the logic in paying them money on top of tons of money they already get. I do like to support the companies that I feel deserve it but for game companies that are gigantic, it just comes off as greedy. Personally anything about about $5 a month is too much unless it's extensively updated which with a lot of MMORPG's is not the case.

That's just my opinion, though :)

Why I like playing Archage, because you can play the game without subbing, but you get so much more out of the game if you subscribe to it. I do understand why people play the games though, some people can't afford to pay for a sub, or they are little kids as someone said. Every MMORPG should be free, just limit what you can do on that game.
