Improve as support

Honestly, the best way to go about it is not to be shy about taking kills either, so I'd recommend you using some supports that can make the most out of that gold if you are to get it. More often than not in the lower leagues you will find that it can't be helped and sometimes you will get the kills, especially if your adc is unreliable.

 

There are few things to keep in mind.
1. wards.
* in early game
- bushes in lanes. (it gives you much more control over your lane)
- dragon (so you can see if enemy is doing dragon or enemy jungler is going to gank after blue buff)
- tribush (enemy jungler may come trough your jungle and try to dive or avoid dragon ward
- try killing enemy wards. as yours give you more control over the game, killing theirs gives them less control
* midgame and late game
- entries to river (wraith path, blue buff, tribushes)
- objectives (dragon, baron)
-buffs (so you can gank unsuspecting jungler)

2. laning
* dont kill minions except when adc is not in the lane. in that case you can last hit them so you dont push the lane
* follow the map. if mid is MIA, be careful.
* know jungling. it is really helpful, that way you can predicts where jungler is and when you see him on the map how much time you have before he goes bot lane.
* harass. this is easy. every time adc tries to last hit, you hit him.

3. supporting
* learn your friends and enemies. if you know their spells and CD you will know when to be passive and when to be agressive.
* learn which supports work great with which ADC's. it can give you great edge over the enemies.
* protect your adc's life at all cost.
* is someone is at bad position (came too far to you) set him for a kill.

4. Teamfights
* you are all the way in the back with the ADC, and keeping him in life as long as you can is most important thing as he deals most damage in the team.

 

I think with the support role you just have to maintain focus. I don't think that this is a bad role to have just don't let him get damaged. I think the biggest thing is protect your ADC and your team. Take down the enemies health!
