Hehe. I wasn't like that, I always wanted to get my hands on FF7, but I never saw it. For PC, that is, I never had a PSX. Same with 8, I got to get it pirated, because for the life of me I have never seen FF7/FF8 for PC anywhere. I don't even know how the box looks to this day.
It was amazing when it came out, but it has been surpassed by other Final Fantasy games since. I like 9 better than 7.
FF7 was my first JRPG, and I loved it, of course and that's the main reason why it's my favorite. But if I'm being intellectually honest, it certainly isn't the best. I do however remember thinking it looked awesome at the time. Going back to old games really makes you question what made them valuable to you.
You know, the one thing that was absolutely horrid in FF7, even based on the standards of its time, was... the goddamn translation! Jesus Christ, what a friggin' mess it was, hahahaha! The Spanish one was even worse, since it took the broken English translation and broke it even further! Kinda hilarious, really!
I don't think it's the best in the series, but it's still really good. Final Fantasy does a great job of getting you emotionally attached to the characters and you can really empathize with them. And FF7 really did this with me. I think that's important with games or any kind of media really, that connection with the player. I think that's why 7 is so popular.
It is probably overrated, but anything that is overrated is that way for a reason. Ocarina of Time is my favorite game of all time and I know people tend to ignore its flaws, but I think there is something to be said for a game that is loved 20+ years after its original release date.
I don't really think that this game is overrated. The game is really good and it's one of the best JRPG I've played.
