Is it just me, or is it all the same?

I have to admit that I have noticed that part too ... "All the same". Especially when it comes to leveling up. Most of the MMORPGs out there are using the same old methods for leveling up, which is boring grinding. That's probably the reason why you can't make it pass level 10.

Most of the games do have some kind of goal for why leveling up. Some games for example is for being able to get strong enough to join the raid on big bosses, some other games are for PvP against other players/clans. End game goals are always have some kind of attractions, but I do agree that the leveling up part is getting really old and I'd rather have some interesting real quests instead of kill 10 wolves here and kill goblins there type of silly 3-year-old "quests".

On USA1, two players leveled from Village Idiot to Prince in one week. Apparently, the father/son duo spent about $4000 US worth of card packs to get them both up. Then within the next day, controlled an entire country while others were still Barons and Viscounts. However, they both got reset repeatedly when the rest of their enemies caught up.

The game definitely requires some initial cash investment. After the 2 day free token expires, most players quit the game a day or two later. Then again, even if you spend lots of cash on card packs, you do have a limit of what you can do on a daily basis. You can outrank, emergency repair and even get major boosts to your resources, but in the end, you're still 15 villages with a max of roughly 1900 FP per day against an entire House. Their short term boost only goes so far until the rest of the players catch up and work together against them.

Lately I have felt that the MMO genre has grown stale. It's been a long time since a new game offered anything that I felt was different enough to warrant my playing it over any of the multitude of free 2 play games already out there on the market. There are still a couple unique games out there such as EvE but they are getting fewer and fewer.

The Elder Scrolls had a chance to be something special, but instead they went the way of generic MMO set in TES universe.

It depends on what you like. If you like Diablo for example, then I think you will fall in love with Path of Exile game. I'm playing it at the moment and this is really nice one. I prefer isometric view, so that's even better. I don't like games like Aion, WoW or similiar, because they are all "same". Path of Exile offers new end-game content which are different maps, challenges, achievements.

It's true that a lot of games (especially Asian F2p games) are just copies of World of Warcraft or other successful MMO's. I was really hopeful for some of the new and unique games that came out like Darkfall or Age of Conan but I eventually got bored of those games and went back to the same old games.

I agree with this. WoW has pretty much reshaped the MMO mindset and the game looks. It's not something you can easily pass up.

I can suggest figuring out first what type of genres that interests you then filter out your specification on what environment you want for the game. Then decide if you want free to play or if you're willing to spend on a game. I do understand what you mean though, there are lots of MMOs out there that starts to look and feel too standard and almost "copied". Doing a little research is a good idea then look them up over YouTube, watching gameplay recordings always helps.

I think it's just hard to find new and exciting content because all of the new content is based on tried and true methods.

I feel like almost all MMORPGs follow the same kind of design, and only varies in the type of equipment or enemies you can fight. Then again, I haven't plaid too many because I hear so many negative things about so many different games.

Some of the smaller project MMOs, sure. There will always be similarities. Almost every RPG is set in medieval fantasy and has elves.

There are many projects that use the same engine, etc. which can give that cookie-cutter feel.

There are some unique gems out there, but it all depends on what you're looking for.

Well, it's not just you, trust me. This has been my conclusion since I first started playing Runescape and other games that fall in this category. It's just the way developers manage to hide obvious resemblances to other games.

I agree. Most games nowdays are just far too similar to one another. Same routine and all that bs. So nowdays, I play for the storyline and how much I can customize and make my character pretty LOL , I gave up looking for a game where I can really enjoy the whole thing as a package..

The final fantasy games are as good now as they were 10 years ago. Maybe you could give those a shot, for "old times same"

I have found that all MMORPG just evolve around the same concept, running around the same circle and breathing the same air metaphorically. I would say that if you want to try something different, Guild Wars 2 is one. After all, if you're looking for a completely different type of MMORPG that isn't like WoW, it's very difficult to find, but the closest I have found to not meet all of the other type of "features" that are so common in all MMORPG games is Guild Wars 2.

You should try out Archage. I got to level 10 myself and was like "This game is amazing!" And now I am level 51 rocking it like it's hot. I mean not many games if any have naval combat where you can summon your very own boat that you built to cruise the sea seeking adventure. Kind of wish this game came out a long time ago, so much time wasted on WoW.

Many of them have SOME of the same gameplay mechanics. But for the better ones, that's where the similarities end. And when you say levels, do you mean like game levels or character levels.

Because if you mean character level, then you haven't really play to much into any of the games you've tried so far.

That's one very poor way to look at any genre of games. Do you feel every fighting game is the same? Or that every fps game is the same? Fans of those genres would definitely take offense to thoughts like that.

It's not just you. This has happened since the dawn of marketable gaming. One gaming company or team finds a style of game that works, and then decided it wants to make money on that genre or type of story-line. lo and behold, you end up with nearly hundreds of the same style of game. It's just poor marketing when that does happen though; it's just too bad it happens so often.

Most of the games are the same but also some games have a different on them. Like the story and some stuff.

A lot of the MMORPGs do feel the same in most ways; dungeons, quests, posssible raids and the inevitable grind for items, gold or experience.

Most of them lack their own dynamics in the way that the fighting system is so simple and doesn't have any diversity to it that it doesn't really matter which class you pick because they will all be pretty much the same with just the name of your skills changed to suit the class. I feel like most games can learn from each other and implement a lot more different skill sets to make a game more challenging or perhaps allow you to have more freedom. Guild Wars 2 looked really promising when it just came out but even that couldn't keep me playing for a very long time.
