I started out in MMOs playing ranged like a lot of folks. I think the idea of standing way back here and sending in a pet, shooting from a distance seems safer.
But once I started playing melee classes I discovered there is great fun there too. Just wade in and whale away at the bad guys - very therapeutic.
Quests and raids are set up so that there are some places it is easier to be ranged, others where it easier to be melee. And some folks prefer a challenge to easy.
Really depends on what you like to do!

Why not both?! Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII had his gun-sword, which sliced and cut, but also gave players the ability to blast monsters. Or a sharpened bow that could be used for close-combat has been used in a few games, but I forgot the name of the titles.

A true warrior, can utilize all weaponry designed for close and distant combat; but it is the master, who wields power with his/her bare hands!

It depends on the game. For example in DDO, rangers were next to useless, but in LOTRO rangers were great characters and fun to play. In DDO, tanks had all the fun while in LOTRO I didn't enjoy being a tank at all. Any random game I will pick a ranged character first and see how it goes.

I always hated being upfront in battles, plus I think I can only make better plays when I'm not constantly being bombarded by a bunch of attacks. :p This applies to both MMOs and MOBAs.

I think that ranged overall will be more effective in the beginnings of PvP battles, charging in as a melee against 50+ ranged people wouldn’t be a really good idea, of course it still depends on your play style, whether you want to flank the ranged forces, or sit back and just keep spamming spells/bow attacks.

I prefer Melee. I love to jump right in and start mashing up everything I can see also I like having more hp and brute force damage. Too fun sometimes! I rarely play ranged because I start to be lazy and just hang around!

When I started playing I was more of a melee guy. Within time, I started to like range characters like Ranger\Magician.

I've always preferred ranged, I don't know why. I guess because I like to kite things around and it's pretty difficult to do that on a melee character.

In RPG, I always pick the melee character first. I feel like swordsmen are easier to fund when you first start a game. They are also your guinea pigs when you are learning a game.

    "Both" are rare.
I know back in Neverwinter Nights there were character builds good at both melee and ranged attacks, but in true top of the line duel against a top build player specialized in just one, these "both" characters aren't that strong unless one of their "both" skills is actually slightly less powerful.

Some mage builds in Neverwinter Nights could buff themselves up to be stronger than the best fighters, but their attacking spells suffers from it.

So yes, you can play "both", but your character aren't the strongest in both categories.

Melee characters are often more fun than ranged characters in a lot of MMOs.

Ive always been the melee type of player for like 90% of games I find it more fun than just standing in the back picking off shots. I Sometimes play Sniper/Support in FPS games but just that not in RPG's or any other type of games.

I prefer Melee than ranged. Melee is more satisfactory for some reason. It gives you the satisfaction of real fighting.

Indeed! I'm really enjoying GW2 at the moment, as I think every class allows you to have both ranged and melee options that you can switch between, depending on the weapon set.

I prefer ranged to melee, however. I like sitting back away from the fight, keeping my character out of dinner, and raining fire from afar/above. That said, I do think melee characters are really fun to play in that the moves seem so much more... gratifying? That said, it depends on the game, as the gratification factor can depend on the animation.

It really depends but I prefer ranged weapons more than anything. I'm pretty slow it terms of combat so having a long ranged attack can give me some extra space and downtime to react more.

I prefer ranged weapons really but I do try my best to be used to both since you can't really expect your enemies to just stay in one spot and not rush into you in battle and most certainly you can't expect yourself to just run away.

Ranged is where I want to be in just about any game. Build up the speed, unlock those abilities and then you could always hope in the mix if you really want to. Although you may not have the endurance warrior classes have speed will still trump strength everytime.... at least in my book anyway.

Without a doubt ranged. I have chosen archer/ranger/sniper as my first choice in any MMORPG I have ever played. I am not really skilled at hand-to-hand moves, and I have never had fast computers or internet connection, so it seems unfair for me to melee fight. From the shadows I can take you out at 1,000 yards!

I prefer Melee than Ranged character. It's not my type to choose ranged but I know that it has advantage because you attack with arrows or magic. But I like how Melee attacks and combos and it's just my opinion.
