I've tried a few Minecraft-esque games. Some of them are actually quite good, the only thing holding some of them back is a lack of a development team to see the game to completion. The 3 that I have tried are:

Mythruna, a Java based game similar to to Minecraft as it's block based and you dig and build. It has been under development for a while and has the capability to be a great game when done.

Minetest is a Minecraft clone that shows some promise too, there is a decent community supporting it and there are mods to enhance the game if you like.

For a MMO like experience try Wurm Online, there's terrain modification, building, mining, crafting, and fighting monsters with other players. Piece of Trivia, Minecraft's creator Notch used to work on this game. The only downside to this one is it's a monthly subscription for premium play, otherwise your character has some tight restrictions if you play free. You can, however, with a little bit of time earn enough premium currency in game to pay for premium.

The open sandbox building game genre is here to stay and there is plenty of room for games to explore all of it's aspects and provide us with endless hours of game play.

Definitely Terraria. It is a 2d game but it has so much more than Minecraft. When I first played it I thought it was just Minecraft in 2d , but when I got about 10 minutes in it I discovered that it has a lot more than Minecraft. There are so much more items, monsters, bosses and mechanics. The singleplayer experience of Terraria is awesome, but the multiplayer lacks a little bit, it is still very fun to play together with friends. I really recommend the game.

Terraria is 2d so it isn't similar to Minecraft at all. It also has way more materials and bosses. Overall, the game focuses on combat and multiplayer. If you looking for something that's story driver, play Starbound, it's similar to Terraria but the graphics are better and there are campaigns

7 Days to Die, it is a zombie survival game which looks and feels pretty similar to Minecraft. Plus you have to fend of zombies which is pretty easy during the day but they get stronger at night which is a nice challenge.

A lot of people are mentioning Terraria. I've heard very little about it. Will definitely have to check it out soon. It is a relatively "older" game correct? I assume it would be fairly cheap on Steam.

Terraria for sure. Don't ever play 7 days to die though. It's really crappy in my opinion. Also, try don't starve. Its relation with minecraft isn't that clear, but they are certainly there.

I personally don't play any of the others. I like Minecraft and I'm sticking to it. Not to mention some of them just look exactly like it. That kinda bothers me.

I just found out about "The Forest". It's far more realistic and still in alpha phase, but has a lot of potential. First thing when cutting a tree in that game I thought about minecraft.

Edge of Space lets you explore a strange planet in 2D Terraria style. The game focuses on exploration and combat with plenty of depth to it. With support for both single player and multiplayer gameplay it’s perfect for both solo and team adventurers. While it’s easy to draw comparison to the like of Terraria and Starbound, the game focuses on a different experience and level of pacing that it does give it a unique vibe.

To top of the entire experience you’ll find Edge of Space has a great list of available biomes, backdrops and sounds that add that extra layer of polish to bring the game to life.

7 days to die is probably the best one. I have played a little bit of Starbound which is a good one as well. Not many games come close to what Minecraft is like though, which is probably a good thing.

Dont really know any apart from terraria. I dont like the fact other games steal concepts of games. Therefore i dont understand why mojang doesnt sue them. As they have all the right to do so.

I think it depends on how you play Minecraft. I agree that Terraria has a strong focus on adventuring, but I think that can be an aspect of Minecraft as well. For me, building is the least important aspect of the game. I make it about exploring and gathering resources, and I often make up a story for my character as I go.

Roblox has been around long before Minecraft, but last time I went on there they had a new building interface that was basically mimicking Minecraft.

I don't think Terraria is similar enough to Minecraft that they can be sued, but there definitely are obvious similarities in the game (which I don't find to be a bad thing in this case).

I have played for a long many games clearly inspirated in Minecraft but I have to say that most of them disappoint me. They are just bad. Of course, there's also games that you could enjoy but you'll never feel the same with this games that with Mincreaft. That's the truth.
