I definitely am with you, especially on that part. But I do have a story of my own. A bit long, but I feel like I need to clarify some parts along the way.

Back in middle school, I'd made friends with a kid who seemed kind of like a loner (as someone who had moved a lot and didn't always find a group of friends very easily, I felt kinda bad for him). He kind of integrated into the main group of friends I had. He was a pretty socially awkward kid who didn't really have any other friends and didn't get along well with his family, so he was almost always asking to hang out with us, to the point where eventually I started turning him down a decent portion of the time just because I wasn't always up to hang out with somebody.

As time went on, into High School, I kinda grew apart from him since when he would usually hang out at our lunch table, he had a really hard time taking jokes and would get mad really easily, making things uncomfortable for others. Eventually most of us stopped hanging out with him (except for one person from the group who was more quiet, they both hung out almost every weekend, so I didn't feel too bad about it at the time).

My Senior Year (grade 12 in case school structure is different for any of you guys) I found out on Valentine's day that he had committed suicide. It really kinda fucked up me and my friends for a while, and really devastated the one who still hung out with him. We all (as a group of friends) made an effort to stop by the family and talk with them a few times. At his funeral, a pretty good portion of the school who were Juniors/Seniors showed up, and I remember the family later mention that they were really appreciative of everybody who came. To us, it was kind of a collective get-together as a community (I lived in a small town) to do what we could to comfort the family for their loss.

TL: DR TIL different people handle death differently

    That's strong, really.
But yeah, I guess there's also the part to it where you could support the ones who've lost the deceased person, by going to the funeral.
In fact, it does belong in the story that I wrote, that the boy's parents were very grateful and touched by the fact that there were so many people there.

Of course, I'm sure almost everyone would appreciate if a deceased relative's acquaintances showed up at the funeral of that relative. However, it is highly likely that they are simply acting according to the social norms of most modern societies - that and it's simple nice of someone to do so, I guess (assuming you think their intentions are genuine). Funerals can be really personal for most people and if those who weren't really close with the one who passed away show up there, then the ones who were really close with the deceased person might feel extremely uncomfortable and unable to express their emotions in a complete way.

This thread is getting depressing fast, btw. :p
