The kettle had just begun to whistle when I heard the rusted steel door open swiftly. It seemed strange and indeed was that that door be opened at this time, and not by me. It should really be locked with such close access to the surface, but this station is and has always been so clumsy with these matters. I understand they can't spare a guard but at least put up a sign if your that stretched. Either way it now comes down to me to investigate. Shifting open the door to my little shack I pop my head out at first to see the fuss and determine if I'll need to bring the Uzi or not.

It looks to be a lone man, dripping wet and filthy when posed to the ivory white tiles behind him. He stands tensely, shivering and cold, gripping a sack dripping with tainted water. I know most of the hollow faces here and his does not match any I know. I've come to the conclusion that the Uzi will not be necessary and approach the man who appears as aged as myself. All the pattering feet and bustle of the station keep there distance from this this entrance and him giving us a buffer zone from their touch. People do not live in this buffer zone, only me. I've built a sheet metal and wood shack from my own scavenging in the corner beside this ominous entrance and only I use it on my trips back and forth. The nearest tent is ten metres away, and crawling further every month it seems. The solidarity offers it's advantages however, like being able to have my own personal fire and space. I don't really see being separated from the herd as a negative to be frank.

Anyway... When I reached the man I saw that indeed his face was nothing I'd recognize in this Metro. Strangely yellowy eyes and thick skin made him stand out from any other layman. An interesting character to say the least. "Not often a man walks through that door, stranger. I see you've found the swamp, and brought some with you too. A souvenir?" I chuckled quietly. "This is a free station so you're welcome to do as you please, but if you want to dry your things I'm afraid it will not go over well at the public fires. But you're welcome to dry them by my fire before you head out.
    I've just boiled some tea.

My heart almost ascended up my throat for half a second when I realized that a man had gotten as close as he had, and begun talking to me. His boots, his pants, his jacket and his gloves... He looked like a worker. Brown skin and black hair, dusty like the rest of us. Except me, however, who'd just gotten a bath in the swamp. He was an outlander.

I stopped dead in my tracks and stiffened up, staring directly at the man. He kept talking and talking forever, and I had problems following what he said. I understood that he offered me to dry my things in his hospitality instead of at the public areas, most likely because I had entered through the special entrance. I noticed he was a rather solitude man, a bit like myself in fact; his living was the only shelter in this small corner of the station, the nearest tent being ten metres away.

I looked at him after he had offered me some tea, and considered his offer. I eventually figured I'd rather go with him than to sit around with a whole lot of stranges I couldn't trust. Not that I could trust this man. Not yet, at least, but at least I could keep him in front of me, with my back against a wall if the circumstances fit. Finally I begun nodding slowly a few times whilst still staring at him, before I decided I should say something "Yes", and so I'd follow him if he begun escorting me to his home.

Without further hesitation after the mans underwelming response I lead him carefully to my shack whereupon he could hang his things over the fire to dry. It was immediately obvious that he was very tense, around people in general. The way he hugged the walls and scanned his eyes back and forth reminded me of a stray dog trapped in a corner, not sure wether to fight or whimper, but immensely uncomfortable either way. And so I would not bore this man with the usual talks. No no, that would not ease him. I knew most things about him already anyway, it's obvious if you just open your eyes a little.

He seemed lost. No doubt he knew not what station we were in, nor did he seem to be looking for anyone or any item. This must then be an unexpected and, judging by the wet gear, unwanted stop on the trail. But there in we hit the next clue, given away by his dripping cloths once again. He knew not the trail he walked for if he had he would not be wet. And seeing as how he's had the living shit beaten out of him, I'd say he didn't know about the demons nest nearby.

There's a fairy that takes one across the river but only I know how to start the heap as I'm the one who built it and generally, the only one who uses it. If this man wants to get on his way, as I'm sure he's screaming to do, he'll have to suffer my company till tomorrow when I make another trip up.

"Your not much of a talker are you?"...

"I won't even ask your name, since I know you wouldn't care to hear mine. Your free to dry your things here for the night and leave in the morning. But I'll have you know this- if you wish to cross the swamp you'll have to use a fairy which I built some time ago. It's honestly a piece of shit but when you get her going she runs fine...ish. Basically I'm the only one who can get the thing going and unless you want another swim you'll have to wait till I do another trip up top tomorrow morning for scrap metal. This doesn't sit well with you, I'm smart enough to understand that. But this unpleasant stop of yours will have to last the night I'm afraid. Once we get across the swamp, we'll part ways and you can be alone again".

You just described my character so many times better than I could have ever done, and yet the description was 100% correct to what I was imagining, thank you

    This is a Fairy:
    This is a Ferry:

    And I just found this:

I didn't feel very comfortable when he lead me into his home, but it was the best option I had, and I didn't directly expect him to stab me once I'd get inside... not entirely, at least. I hung up different items from string and other attachments I could use, over the bonfire. Ammunition and my weapons, I brought with me to the chair that I pulled close to the fire, and sat down.

"You're not much of a talker, are you?", the man asked. I looked up at him and kept my eyes on him while he talked. I expected him to be exaggeratedly friendly, but his choice of words changed to a different tone, more direct and determined, not wanting to waste my time. He could understand that I'd fallen in the swamp and that that was the reason I was in the station, and offerend me a ride across the swamp on a ferry. The thought of spending so much time on such a small transportation-device with another person, with nowhere to leave, didn't appeal to me. But it sounded too good to be true, after the distances I had walked. Besides, this man seemed alright.. so far.

I was about to talk when I realized I was still wearing my half-gasmask. I unstrapped it, revealing a scruffy goatee with a lack of hair-growth; a few thin long hairs widely spread across my lips and chin. The radiation hadn't been kind to me over the years. Sitting with my hands on my thighs, I answered "Thank you", and with a little pause, I continued "I will cross the swamp with you tomorrow", I said clearly, with a firm nod. I almost jumped at the sound of my own voice. It was much darker than I thought, and way more smooth than I had expected. If there was one thing the radiation hadn't destroyed, it was my beautiful voice..

And so I began the difficult task to remove all moisture from the AEK-971 and the HK USP Match, as well as the large Pneumatic weapon. Luckily, I had kept the ammunition in water-proof containers.

I actually managed to clip into the gas mask of my character's model, in Garry's Mod. Here's the screenshot of what I imagine the face to look like:

    EDIT:
I'll skip this forward a little bit, since this roleplay is dedicated to be set on the surface, for the sake of focusing on Covalent's Dark One character.

"Anything else?", I asked, getting ready to lie down on what seemed to be the structure of a bed in the corner of the room, still relatively close to the fire. I'd let my things dry on the fire for the night, and my clothes dry from my body temperature. Hopefully nobody would steal my stuff while I was sleeping, if I'd be able to sleep at all.

This is why I got a 63 in English. I had a feeling I was wrong but I honestly didn't know lol I one time legitimately forgot how to spell 'so'.

"Anything else?" the man said to me.

"What, would you like to talk more? I've got a lovely story on how I built this place! Or you can rest up. I think I know your answer."

And with that I blew out the lamp dangling in the middle of the shack and slid deep under the covers of my bed. We'd get about 6 hours of sleep before the time would come. At least I would anyway, not saying anything for the other guy. And with the gentle flames shining a warming glow across the wall I slept as well as any day.

When morning came it was the same routine. A quick snack, gear check, quick prayer and an Uzi slung tight. The only difference was the strange man sleeping in my shack. I didn't spend much tine with him in these waking hours. I simply told him it was time and that I'd be waiting by the same door he entered from last night. At which point we'd head up through the dank tunnel and up that long ladder.

I tried to stay awake for some time, not really being sure wether to sleep or not. But eventually, the night took its toll, and I fell asleep. I still wasn't emotionally comfortable, but the warmth and the fact that I didn't need to be afraid of mutants, had me drift away quickly. I was deeply asleep when I awoke at the voice of the man, and I felt really bad that I had managed to fall asleep. I felt like I didn't deserve to still be alive after letting my guard down like that, but never had I either felt so well rested.

He left, waiting at the entrance to the station that I had used the day before. I collected all my gear, now luckily dried, and sorted it all into my backpack. With the pneumatic gun on the left side of my backpack and the AEK-971 on the right side of it, I stepped out of the shed and headed for the entrance, in my dry warm clothes. It was time to get moving, I'd wasted enough time here. Arriving at the entrance, I nodded at the man. "It's time to go", I said shortly as I strapped the half gasmask onto my face, and waited for him to go first.

I believe this where 'TheDarknessEnvelopes' has his character waiting so I'm not sure how to proceed here. I'll just let him post. I am in front with Skaara to the rear.

It's been a week since he posted his post, and I'm not gonna sit around and wait for him. He'll have to reply now, or he's gonna have to move his character forward whenever he may later come back, to an area where our characters are then.

We arrived back up on the surface, the wooden plank was still holding up the cover. I suppose that this man somehow knew of a way to open in from the inside, that I hadn't understood, since he had used it many times before and occasionally still do. (The reason I made my character believe it was unopenable from the inside, was just so I could put something there as a sign so the Dark One would know that my character would later be coming back out through the same manhole. Like the piece of wood).

The cold immediately hit my face like a punch, and I loved it. I was once again back home. Well, perhaps not home, but rather where I belonged, at least. Where I was meant to be. The surface's howling wind screamed for my name, and the cold embraced me like a hug from someone I held dear. My journey would continue, and I was cooperating with my destiny; I was willing and ready. "In what direction is your ferry?", I asked the man after strapping on my gasmask.

The emergence onto the surface was as cold and beautiful as it ever was with it's pale charming winds cleansing you of the filth from the Metro below. I inhale a deep breath of the iradiated air before stretching my mask over my head. I've always taken a deep and fully breath of this air for good luck and to slowly build a tolerance. It's like a tradition you could say. Loading my Uzi and extending the stock I stood out through the window and surveyed the swamp. "If you want to get through this swamp dry all you have to do is follow the red flags. They lead you through to the ferry in the safest way. There's a demons nest on the church rooftop. Can't see it from here. It's attracted to the noise of the ferries engine so we'll just have to cross our fingers. It's good too though, means there's no mutants running around here, they're scared of the demon. Did you see any last night? Anyway, let's move."

From the manhole I started striding side to side in big steps to leave wide and far tracks. It scares away smaller mutants that I don't want running around my entrance. As we strode deeper into the swamp things felt more and more strange. I'd walked this path many times and seen many things, felt unusual feelings and had odd thoughts but the aura I was feeling today was new. Maybe it was the swamp gases slowly penetrating my filters or a strange high from my earlier breath of fresh air, but it was strange. It could be the strange man behind me but it felt like I was being watched in an almost omnipresent way. I even stopped for a moment and slowly gazed at the sky and bringing my stare down onto the stranger to see if the feeling would be quenched somehow. Nothing. "Do you feel that... Presence?" not waiting for an answer I rushed back on path. The ferry was close and all was quiet so far except for that itchy feeling.

Not long after the ferry can into view through the haze and we rushed on quickly. Checking the gas it was clear a return trip could not be made without some new gas but the journey there would be made easy. After a few moments of fiddling with some of the wiring and buttons the motor reluctantly kicked up to life. "Hazaa! She's still got it!" I expressed my pleasure. We started moving now, slowly at first but eventually picking up speed to a steady cruise. A thick fog hung over these parts and it became hard to see the other shore until several minutes had passed. With the sighting of the shore came the ruined picture of the church which was the sign that we were crossing into the demons home territory, a dangerous thought. "If we get through here there's only a few hundred metres more of swamp until were in the clear. It seemed close now, but now a shadow loomed over head. One pass at first, but getting closer now. It was no doubt what it was, a demon flew overhead and we had been clearly spotted. I waited at first to see if it would ignore us but luck like that wasn't there today. It roared ferociously and began a dive toward our small ferry. "Take it down!" I shouted as I began firing bursts as he screamed in. Wether I hit him with my pea shooter or not didn't matter, this demon was smart. He knew this swamp and how to hunt in it. He hurtled himself down and at the last second spread his wings whited unleashed a massive wave beside us. I tried to keep my footing but the entire ferry flipped over on us. Despite the terrible situation all I could think about was the poor strange, wet again. If this water wasn't over my head we could stand a chance. But this was very bad.

"It was silent, like you say, as it is now", I answered as we exited the building. I didn't really know what he meant by Demon, but I had a clue. "But don't forget there's a world of mutants below us, that you can't see", I added. On our way to the ferry, the man seemed to be alerted of something. Once, he even stopped and asked me "Do you feel that... Presence?" before he kept walking. I stood still and looked at his back while he kept walking, until I decided to follow his tracks furthermore. "I always do", I replied faintly.

We arrived at the ferry. It wasn't large, but it seemed to work. A special wooden construction. We drove through the muddy water for a while, passing through some fog. All the while, I leaned on a post on the other side of the small ferry, keeping an eye on the surroundings, as well as him. We eventually made it through the fog and could now see the other side of the swamp, and the church. A shadow passed above us once, and I immediately knew it was the "Demon", that the man had mentioned. I looked at him for a tip of what to do, but he seemed to want to wait for it to pass us. But the mutant sweeped down right towards us, and he opened fire towards it. I looked desperately around the ferry for something to grab a hold of, because I was not going down with this thing, or up with that thing. But there didn't seem to be anything to jump onto around us. A curvy rotten tree that would probably fall if I jumped onto it, some poles sticking up from the water here and there. Even if I had managed to grab onto one, I'd have no way to get to land without going into the water.

The mutant was actually clever enough to avoid his shots by diving directly down, then spread its wings beside the ferry, causing a massive wave to hit our transportation. I clung onto it like a cat that didn't want to go in the bathtub, but it was no use; the ferry was tipping over. I stood up and sprinted forwards, towards the shore. I didn't know how deep it was where the ferry tipped over, but hopefully it would be a bit more shallow closer to the shore. As the ferry was standing almost sideways, I leaped off of it towards the shore, with the final push of my left foot. Unfortunately, the ferry was so slippery from the moist air that my last push slid on it, causing me to fly skew.

I didn't land on my feet, as planned, but rather more fallen over. My front side hit the water, but the rotation from the slide, caused me to roll around twice. On my first impact, the water was deep enough for me not to hit the ground, but the rolls had caused me to end up on more shallow water, where I planted my feet on the murky ground and pulled myself up, trying to remain in balance. I looked towards the ferry to look for the man, but the first thing that met my eyes was the Demon with its wings spread widely as it was slowing down its speed, and its feet aimed directly at me. I turned 180 degrees around and ducked, covering my neck with my hands. But my effort seemed fruitless as the sudden move caused my feet to slip on the slippery layer beneath my feet, and I began losing balance. This automatically caused me to stand up again to regain my balance, and so the creature got a hold of my backpack.

Soon, I could feel the straps from the backpack, around my waist and shoulders, pulling me up into the air. Slightly ascending, mostly forwards towards shore. The first thought that struck me was to slide out of the straps, but I didn't get the chance as the straps snapped as they couldn't hold my weight, and down I fell again. Not that far downwards, but mostly forwards as I hit the ground and rolled a couple times yet again, before I hit the side of an old rusty car with my back, and a loud bang. Luckily it didn't seem to have any sharp edges or anything, but it still wasn't the best thing to hit. I landed on my stomach with my dreadlocks covering my face, lying flat on the ground as I whimpered with my lost breath.

Well, this appears to be as good a place as any to jump in! I'll go ahead and have my character enter, but I won't yet intervene. Once you call for help, I'll be sure to help out. :D I have to go to work right now, unfortunately, so I'll try to post once I get back.

    EDIT: OK, here goes!

I awoke abruptly after a dreamless sleep. I'd been having such nights for quite some time now. But the day was new, and I felt more optimistic that I'd be able to find this human, or perhaps others. With this in mind, I began my usual daily routine of almost aimless wandering. Just as I'd set off, I became aware of just how thirsty sleeping had made me. I dashed off to slake my thirst at the swamps.

Finding a good source of water, even for one such as myself, was no easy task. Much of the marsh water was scummy, mossy, and tinged with various unpleasant shades that looked like they couldn't sustain any life. Nonetheless, I was able to find a patch of fresh (at least for me; I had no idea what sort of impact it would have on a human who drank it) water, and I imbibed quickly and somewhat sloppily. It was at that point that something came to my attention and led me to spring into action immediately: I spotted a small craft navigating through the waters at a fairly close distance. They did not see me yet, as I was hidden behind some tall overgrowth. As the craft, now identifiable as a small raft, neared, I observed its occupants. One I immediately recognised as the the human from the other day, the yellow one.

Gazing upon the other figure, I was hit with an almost blinding, stunning verdant aura. This man, clearly, was a pacifist, one who wanted to befriend others, not kill or maim them. Such humans were a rare find, especially in these times. I was actually taken aback at this, to the point that I almost missed what transpired next. In the blink of an eye, the occupants of the raft found themselves assailed by another of the winged beasts that had plagued me yesterday. The humans fought hard; even the green one's aura had taken on a reddish hue when met with the irreconcilable threat. I, too, believed in necessary force when defending oneself.

Unfortunately, it looked like their combined forces would not be enough, as the mutant got ever closer to capsizing the raft and drowning both men, and even if the water didn't get them, this animal surely would. Believing this to be my only chance, I sped out from behind the undergrowth, and took up a position standing on the bank, so that I could look the mutant in the eyes. As I did this, once again I thought with all my might, so that time slowed once again, giving me the time to plan out my intended action.

Sorry I haven't been posting, I've been building and installing things on a computer for the best part of last week so here goes

Gunshots shook me awake. I had fallen asleep somehow. Well, at least my hiding place was good. I stood up and stretched before striding through the mud to look up at the manhole cover. Open now. I climbed up and emerged into a building. Might as well do some stalkering while I'm up here. Was stalkering a verb, not quite sure, still, I looked around. Nothing of any interest. It was an exit point from the metro anyway, it would have been picked clean years ago. I walked to a window and looked down at the swamp. Gunfire could still be heard and a screeching. I knew the sound. Big, giant bird things or demons or whatever the locals called them. All I knew them by were evil nightmares from hell which made me keep to cover as much as possible. I scouted the swamp to see the red flags. Following them couldn't hurt. I may find a ranger outpost which I could pick clean. I jumped down into the swamp and started to follow the red flags. As I strolled through the swamp as if it was a sunday walk, ignoring the fact that this swamp contained giant prawns from the very depths of tartarus, I felt like I was being watched. I shivered but carried on and reached a weird engine type thing. The upset was happening from within the fog covering the swamp in front of me . I sat down and waited, still feeling the unseen watcher

Well, we're all still waiting for Aaron :)
My character is still kind of trying to regain himself on the ground. I suppose Darkness' character is at the area where the ferry starts, which is where Aaron and I just left from. Aaron is in the water and needs to react. Perhaps he doesn't notice the dark one because he's overthrown by all the water and has to focus on it.

The water is cold and grimy beyond repair and saving. It instantly fills every fibre of my clothing and drags me down to the silty depths. My body sinks nearly to my knees as I try to trudge through to the shore just metres away after a steep drop. My Uzi hangs loosely from one hand and the other grips at my mask in instinct. It too is full and making the cloudy water even harder to see through. I have no time to worry about any aquatic life that my be slithering through my legs and my only hope is that they aren't agitated by my flailing presence. If they are calm I have a chance. If not, I'd be dead already.

With the last steps I can consciously take and the black border closing in around my eyes I feel the air rush onto my body and the water churn at my hips and ever lower. I collapse onto my knees and rip the mask from my face to gasp at the air no matter how poisonous it may be, an exact example of why I breath one gulp on every mission in preparedness. The Uzi I toss in front of me so I can use both hands to rest on and regain my awareness.

My eyes are choked full of the grimy water and I try to wipe it out with my hands. The blurred world comes into view again. In front of me, a man. Maybe the stranger has come to help or regroup. But it's strange with my blurry vision. He's taller than I remember, much taller. His silhouette is soley a rough grey and his arms are impossibly long.

I stretch my hand out to him for help up. Maybe it will seem clearer if we were both standing.

I was surprised when the human reached out a sopping wet hand; perhaps the water was blurring his vision, because most humans I encountered simply ran... or drew their weapon. However, the man's bright aura betrayed his pacifism all too well, not that I was complaining. I would help him, but approach him very cautiously. Many deceitful men may put on a mask of trustworthiness and appear to carry the best intentions. Something was different, though. I scoured him deeply but could find no hidden intentions. Either way, I would be careful.

I grabbed the man's hand, and through a combination of psionic power (which must have been a huge, shocking realisation to him; I believe he thought I was a human) and my physical strength, I lifted him quickly, but smoothly from the marsh and deposited him gently onto the bank. I took a quick look at the human: he was a sopping mess, of course, and his firearm now likely lay useless. With that, I dashed backwards, deeper into the overgrowth. This left me in a position where I was still visible to the man, but he posed no threat to me with any hand-to-hand weapons he may have. From this distance, I could try deflecting bullets, too, but I hoped that that would not need to be an issue. After all, this human seemed very open about his actions.

I stared silently at him as he recovered from his unplanned swim.

I clenched my eyes and moved my hands onto my back in pain. In pure instinct, I rolled over onto my back, but placed my heels and my shoulders against the ground and pushed my stomach and back upwards, to keep the back away from the ground. With my elbows planted on the ground, I held my back and tried to focus on keeping that odd position, in order to avoid as much pain as possible, for the while that the pain would be at its worst. I expected the Demon to make a swift return as it would find out that there was no meat left below the backpack, but that wasn't what I focused on at that moment. For a few more seconds, I would just lie there and try to calm the pain.
