*sigh* we fucked up. we had no planes on stand-by during that time.

stuff like this was somewhat common during the cold war, russian planes going towards stockholm and southern sweden to turn around just before the border.

Maybe we should put the plans of militarizing Gotland in process...

basically, in the middle of the night 2 russian bombers type TU-22M3 with fighter escort was spotted over the finnish bay by swedish radar, but instead of flying to Kaliningrad as usual they turned straight towards sweden. Nato sent up 2 danish F-16 from lithuania to shadow the russians.
About 2 in the mornign the russian planes about 30-40 km from the swedish territorial border. After that they turned and returned the way they came from.

Usually, the swedish airforce is supposed to keep 2 Gripen planes on stand-by with the role of identifying and documenting foreign aircrafts and if needed repulse invaders for an unknown amount of hours every day, unlike the 24/7 stand by of NATO. UNfortunatley for us,we had none on stand-by during that time-period.
So if it had been a real attack and just not a simulation we would not been able to stop them.

Damn man, that was completely unnecessary. You know, funny thing is, I was one of the people saying that 33 people died in a different country on the same day and no one gave a fuck. I agree with you 100% about the media coverage surrounding the Boston bombings. They made a bloody spectacle out of it, whilst thousands of people die around the world and no gets to see that. A perfect example of American elitism. If every time a tragedy like this occurred around the world they'd show it to us on television, then we would have no other channels on TV other than the ones covering these events.

Also, let me copy and paste what I wrote:
From this, you came to the bizarre conclusion that I'm shocked at people joking about the Boston bombings. Tbh, I don't see much point in joking about it - but I never said I was shocked. The only - I repeat the: ONLY - facts you should have drawn from my comment are:

    1. I am not shocked by the Boston jokes.
    2. I wasn't shocked to begin with as I was expecting them.
    3. I don't see any point in jokes that are supposed to shock but don't shock.
    4. I think that most people at my school are idiots.

Any other conclusion you drew from my post is based entirely on your assumptions of what I meant, not what I actually wrote. In other words: you ranted at a person who has pretty similar views concerning the matter and you didn't even know it.

Russians can draw bad conclusions from that, too. Never the less, they are not aggresive like that anymore and they're probably just fucking around (they enter Danish airspace on the regular too). But I use that as an argument whenever some pacifist says we don't need new fighter-planes to replace the rice-cookers currently in use - we need to display supremacy in our own airspace and maybe more importantly in the Arctic/Greenland airspace, where Russia would probably very much like a piece of the cake.

Ha! Wouldn't be the first time Russia's sent bombers over foreign territory. They do it to us about 12-18 times a year since 2007.

    http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2010/07/30/14874221.html

Here's a short piece of the article:

Previous Russian incursions into Canadian airspace

February 2009: Hours before U.S. President Barack Obama's big visit to Canada, two Russian bombers were intercepted just outside the Canadian Arctic.

Two Canadian CF-18s were dispatched to signal the Russian aircraft to turn back to its own airspace.

The Russians called Canada's reaction "a farce."

General Walter Natynczyk, the chief of the defence staff, said, at the time, sporadic incidences of Russian incursions had started in 2007 after many years of no activity.

August 2008: Canadian jets scrambled during a visit by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to Inuvik in the Arctic to intercept an aircraft nearing Canada's airspace.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay said Russians were unwilling to notify Canada of planned military flights nearing our airspace.

September 2007: Russians boasted that two of their Tu-95 bombers flew along the coasts of Alaska and Canada and returned via the North Pole during a 17-hour flight. They said their flight was accompanied by NATO planes.

It's just like the comic you posted about the artic oil! Lol

Oh!, here's a short video on the most recent trip I think:

Exactly. They do it on the regular, but the reasoning is sort of unclear to me - are they trying to see if the nation would be able to stop an eventual attack or what?

I wasn't saying you were shocked by Boston jokes, anyone who spends enough time on the internet has probably heard them all before and I wasn't trying to have a go at you or anything, when you said "that doesn't bode well for the people at my school" I thought you were saying that those who joke about such things are idiots and only bad will come of it. I thought you were trying to get at me for doing so. I guess that's what happens when you spend most of your time around stuck up wankers at college who think that their 'Like' on Facebook will help save a child in Africa and that anyone who has different tastes is a moron. I hate talking to people on the internet, I always misinterpret text

I wanted to see what everyone really thinks about that sort of thing to be honest.

Edit: By the way DarkBringer that story about the earthquake in China only appeared in my newspaper yesterday 0.o

I haven't looked into this to be honest but I doubt the Russians are testing enemy defences unless it's to see how well Russia could fight back if it was attacked. A lot of people, although they fear Russia seem to think they're still very vulnerable after the collapse of the Soviet Union (didn't they suffer great cuts in the military budget or something?) so they may also just be showing that they won't be fucked around.

    Definitely not.
But what is there to be ashamed about really? We have been killing each other since the human race came about, even hunting each other. Death is nothing to bother about to be honest. Of course those who are close to the dead should be bothered, not because of the actual death but what happens as a result of them dying, for example a child being put into care or something because their parents died but a joke doesn't have any real effect on them does it? A joke means nothing, it's just a joke. I know people who complain about jokes about dead people yet laugh at the disabled for example. If anything it's just as bad. People laugh at deaths in works of fiction, the idea of it is just as bad but because it's not real it's okay?

When I made that little joke before I wasn't originally going to post it as I know what people are like. I usually only share that sort of stuff with my friends but I just thought fuck it, everyone seems to be enjoying jokes about Korea.

Ugh, I hate to derail this thread further, but I think this is slightly relevant. My teacher tried to rant to me about how Russia is using the Syrian conflict as a market for weapon deals. I had done research prior to the class and politely raised my hand, saying, "Russia had these deals in place waaaaay before any revolution began. And besides, the United States supplies countries with weapons (e.g. Israel, Egypt, must I go on?)... why can't Russia?". She then tries to guilt me into sympathizing for civilian losses, and yes, of course the loss of life in Syria is astounding, but how many lives do drone strikes in Pakistan claim daily? How many civilians has the United States killed in its wars? I ended up telling her to "get off your high horse" and "look at the world around you". It felt pretty damn good. /rant

Any similar stories? Just to keep the conversation going.

I completely understand that you had to educate your teacher on that matter. Arms trade is a dirty business, and that she blames RF for supplying one of the few allies Russia has left in ME is just absurd.
About drone strikes, I sort of see your point. But they have been quite effective in taking out HVTs too. And obviously you can't send in some SEALs everytime you have a target. So I don't see the alternative, other than the US ought to be better at repaying damages and replacing lost limbs. I just read an article on it, and the main reason civilians in Pakistan, Iraq and 'Stan sometimes hate the US is that they don't recognize the damages - they don't pay for a new leg, new cows or even for a lost family member. And it isn't exactly easy to know who to repay when you strike from miles up at a heat signature :eek:hwell:

EDIT: This looks suspiciously like drunk posting. I'll just fix the errors...

There's this muslim kid in the other class, and he's not a radical or anything, but he views Bin Laden as a freedom fighter. We were all celebrating the shooting of Bin Laden when he proclaimed that he actually fought for the rights of muslims. I was quite astonished. If anything muslims have got worse rights now than before :(
