I played Rift for a couple days when they announced their free to play model. The graphics are nice, but the gameplay was rather dry. If you like quests where you need to go out and kill X monsters or collect Y drops, then this game does it well. The beginning area where you're immersed in the lore was about as exciting as it got.

One big rumor is that its pay to win.
No, it's not pay to win. You can buy T1 (current raids go up to T2) gear for money (several hundred bucks for a full set), but you can get the same gear for free after not that much time, plus some T1 raid drops are better than the purchasable ones (you can also get those for marks). Almost everything that's in the Rift Store is cosmetic stuff. SL souls and Trade Skill Extensions are pretty useful, but they can be bought through acquiring plat.
Rogues and clerics make better tanks than warriors.
Clerics and mages are your support classes. All four classes can dps. Most traditional warriors, mages, clerics, and rogues exist in game, but there are plenty of different specs in Rift.
    It's all about having fun.

I've played the first 20 levels or so. It's free to play which is really nice. It is also quite pretty, both in art style and technical graphics. I lost interest because the story and combat were not really that interesting to me unfortunately. You might have a different experience though!

I hear that it's a great game that ruined itself by going the pay-to-win route. I wouldn't even bother honestly OP.

Unfortunately this is what happens to a lot of games nowadays. Seeing as it's free to play I don't see the harm in trying.

You should definitely check Rift out especially if you like WoW style MMOs. It's very similar to WoW and it's not just a WoW clone. I actually find it to be better than WoW when it comes to open-world events at least. It's also free and not p2w so it doesn't hurt to try it.

Since RIFT went free to play, there is no reason to not try it out.
Just download it and give it a go, try out different classes if you don't like the first one you pick, sine the way they play is very different from one to another.
