Just start off by getting some wood and food. If you did all this set up a basic cave hut like 4x4. Keep getting wood and food untill it gets to night time. Head of into your cave and start mining. Thats what i do when i start of!

To survive, always bring a torch, a weapon and food with you. If you're almost dead, just switch to peaceful mode. It is a pussy move but it saves you from dying.

Don't dig straight up or down if you don't know what is there.

Don't craft a whole set of wooden tools once you get wood, just craft a wooden pickaxe, get cobblestone, and craft a set of stone tools.

Don't delay making a shelter the first night, it will be useful (unless your on peaceful mode)

Don't waste scarce materials on things you don't need

Ex: If you only have 3 diamonds, don't craft a sword first

The only NESSACARY Diamond things you need are a pickaxe, that is your first priority only make armor and other tools if you have an excess of diamonds.

If you are going to the Nether or The End, make sure you are prepared with tools and armor and whatever else you might need.

Always have food, your first food might be chicken, mushroom stew, or even steak depending on what biome your in.

If you don't have a home, your basically screwed so make this one of your first priorities.

Stay away from monsters, unless you have a suitable weapon (such as a stone sword)

If you sleep in a bed, it will set your spawn there, but if it is broken, your spawn will revert back to normal.

My own Personal First Day Priorities

    1. Get plenty of wood.
    2. Make a suitable home.
    3. Find a cave to explore (if you can, but this can wait until a later day if it must)
    4. Get some food (probably from the wildlife if there is some)
P.S. If there isn't any wildlife in the biome you are in you might want to find another biome.
    5. Do all of this before it turns night time (it may seem overwhelming but if you start as soon as you spawn, you will have a better chance of doing these things.

The first thing I do is just dig a hole into the side of a mountain and just crash there every night. The odds of getting into a fight that way are pretty slim.

I like to get as many things done as possible within the fist minecraft day, so the best thing to do first is immediatelyfind a tree, craft a wooden pickaxe only, andcraft a set of cobblestone tools and a ffuture ace after getting 17 cobblestone.
What I will also strongly recommend is to immediately start on a wheat farm, as seeds are not all that had to get and animals may be very rare at times, causing your hunger bar to drop into oblivion and leaving you with half a heart of health. Start small and build a tiny farm, sufficient for a few pieces of bread each harvest, then gradually expand it to provide larger reaps so you can go sprinting while adventuring.
When night falls, try to avoid staying out in the open if you are without a set of armour, no matter how skilled you are the skeletons will surely get you especially if there is a whole wave of them approaching you, they have deadly accuracy and kill you in a few shots, as the knock back from their arrows makes it harder to get to them. Trust me, I've died from this many times before.
Another important tactic to note when fighting a large tirade of mobs is to hide behind some cover and pick them off one by one, which prevents being thrown about by mobs and getting overpowered by a large crows of mobs.

The first must-do when starting a survival game is to get as much wood as you can. This is key when building the most basic tools in the game;harvesting cobblestone and whatnot. It is also important to build any kind of shelter, out of dirt or something, before it gets really dark.

I think this really hits the nail on the head. I would also suggest to be extremely wary of creepers after the first night. Those things always get you when you have your back turned.

I say, if all else fails, dig three blocks down and fill the top block. And there you go, you are safe for the night.

I think the best way to avoid the skeletons at first is by hiding in the ground. When you start out, build a hole in the ground and then live there. When you see a skeleton, just drop in :)

The first thing I do on any survival world is get food and wood so 1. I can stay alive and 2. I can make a temporary house/shelter.

Yeah, bide your time until you've at least a bit of armour and food. At night time or in caves, mark your way home using torches and never go too far away, unless you've nothing to lose.
