What do you guys think of playing on private servers?

I played on private servers back in 2006. After that I decided to try the official servers for a bit. I'm still on official servers and would no way in hell get back to private ones. It's awesome to play bug free and with tons of players as well!

I don't really like private servers. Atleast not the ones that are exactly like the real game only then they're very buggy and there's just not much people playing. The best part about WoW is that there's always someone playing which makes it feel like real, living world. The thing about private servers is that they're just boring, and especially the ones where you start max level with the best gear. That gets really tiresome after a while.
I do like the vanilla private servers though. Played on those a while back and enjoyed the nostalgia.

Oooh. I enjoyed private servers so much. Could you, by any chance, recommend any vanilla servers in pm?

This is why I never cared for it, what makes real WoW so fun is that it requires time from you, private servers takes that away and it feels boring and pointless. There is no prestige.

I've tried a private server a couple of years ago. i just don't see any benefit to doing that. They're not going to work as well as the real deal, they're buggy and they might pose some security risks as well. There's no upside to using a private server.

Gonna give vanilla servers a try, they really caught my eye (and I was all against private servers).

Official WoW is really boring, not really worth paying for the expansions and the subscription fee just to run a bunch of boring dailies and queue for a dungeon or raid all day in the main city. This is mostly why the new expansions since WotLK have gone downhill. At least Cataclysm was fun at the beginning, but the content nerf was the last straw. Now I spend my time on TBC and Vanilla private servers.

Its ok. Not worth it though because its not as reliable or safe as the original WoW servers, especially if you have to pay for a private. If paying for a private, just use the original

I think it's fine. I mean Blizzard is basically fine with it too. They know how faulty those servers are and they probably have very specific data how many people came from private serers to original did. Hell, I did it that way. All of my friends did it this way. It's better to at least try the game than just move on if you don't want to pay for the game upfront.

I think Blizz should absolutely support private servers and dedicate a few realms to be level 60/70/80/85/90, etc. There are plenty of people who would play just to go back to WOTLK or whatever their favorite expansion might be. They're missing an opportunity imo to keep the subscriber base up.

As for myself, I play on a 60 private server and have some fun raiding MC. Nothing quite like old-school raiding for some great nostalgia purposes.

meh, I woudlnt want to play in private server because the population wouldnt be big enough for me to play arenas like i do. All i ever do is queue for arenas, and I like to play really competatively to boost my rating. With private servers i just dont think the competition will be as fierce and the game will be way too buggy also.

I just don't see the value in it. I don't want older content, less reliability, less support. There are fewer players as well.

Playing in a private server is tons of fun! I love being able to go back and only play certain expansions. My friends and I play on a Burning Crusade server and love it! We have great memories on private servers! The only reason I wouldn't use a private server is if I had nobody to play with. Playing on a private server by yourself (regardless of how many people are online) is no fun whatsoever.

Private servers are both good and bad depending on what version you're playing, population, etc. Right now, if you want to feel nostalgic, or came to WoW later and want to see how it was in the old days, try Nostalrius. It has a lot of people online and is pretty much bug-free.

I think Blizz just doesn't want to make classic/BC servers. If hobby developers and the like could create fairly good vanilla and TBC private servers over the years, then Blizz could do the same with more resources.
