What do you like to see in a server?

Yeah, a true survival server. Where markets and shops can be established, along with mighty cities but those have to be guarded, or else they would be destroyed by the griefers/raiders, I would really like to see a server like this, maybe a whitelisted one?

My server is like that (not whitelist, though). It has towny installed, to protect builds, but outside towns there's nothing to stop any kind of griefing. Griefing outside of towns is technically against the rules, but that's rarely enforced. Player shops can be made, every player on the server has permission to create chest shops anywhere they want.

I prefer to have an open rule-set with few restrictions on player behavior (as long as people are being generally respectful in regards to abusive language) enforced by the mods. It creates a closer picture to what I would imagine a simulation for human behavior in a new environment to be. On a previous server I played on the most fun I had was when the admin went on vacation.

Yeah, I can imagine it's always nice to see admins that either don't act like admins, and play with everyone else, or try to stay out the way completely. I've always tried to make my server as close to what people want as I can, which is I guess why I made this thread.

This. Sometimes I want the moderators and chat-mods to chill out and play with me for a bit. It does seem like they do quite a lot of work that's volunteer based.

Yep, my server is a little understaffed so I'm doing most of the stuff right now. Every day I just spend one hour not doing any admin stuff, I just help other people build houses and stuff.

Yeah, but I feel if you restrict the people that can play on a server, it takes away the freedom and huge diversity/creativity a server has potential to have. Yeah, griefing can be a problem, but it's not that bad. It would be boring if nothing ever happened to your house to maintain it, or if the world you spawned into was locked up too much. I do like the locked chests though and think they are important to have.

My favorite kind of server would be survival servers, preferably survival modded. It would be great if you could implement a system that protected your builds while you were offline, but when you logged on, your builds were open to being destroyed. A server with very few rules can be extremely fun, because the roleplay is made by the players and is better, rather than forced by the server.

The problem with this system, is that it just makes people not want to log into the server. They think that someone will grief them when they log in, so they just wait until the server looks empty (or don't log in at all). Also, people would just camp out near houses that look nice, then just run in as soon as the owner comes online.

People camping outside of houses would be wasting their time, the owner of the house could be asleep and then they would have to wait 6-10 hours at the least. There could also be a abandoned option where after 3-7 days of not being online, your house decays. Also, there could be a delay of 10 minutes or so to get your bearings after joining the server.

Well, it's an interesting idea. I'll have to look into it :p I'll tell you if I find another server that already has it.

I would like a server that distributes power fairly, giving all players equal items that will help them enjoy their experience in the server.

A plain old survival server would be your best bet, in my opinion. No server mods, apart from the ones that prevent griefing and such. Do not make it so that it is always day, this ruins the survival appeal! If you plan on setting up VIP benefits for people that donate, don't overdo it, making those people overpowered. But probably the most important is to have a warm, friendly community that is nice and welcomeing to new players! That is how you keep the new people on the server. Another thing, if someone is acting up and griefing, don't be affraid to smack him with the banhammer.

ACTIVE STAFF. I can't emphasize that enough. Most servers don't have active staff and you get alot of dickheads running around trying to be funny by "trolling" when in reality its really just annoying..
