What is happening with Russia and Ukraine now?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by Derrame, Feb 28, 2014.

1. Several hundred soldiers from the volunteer batallions are picketing on the Independence Square in Kiev after a failed attempt to storm the ministry of defense building. They demand impeachment of Poroshenko, minister of defence and a number of other figures in the government.

Minister of internal affairs Avakov called them traitors.

2. CNN interview with Barack Obama:

So, the USA did stage the coup. Thanks, Obama.

I thought that was kinda obvious by now? I mean, I even remember talking to some fervent supporters of the changes in Ukraine who were openly saying that they thought it was necessary and supported US influence in there. :p

4. No, it really wasn't. It was a crazy "conspiracy theory".

But after recent official claims about economic sanctions as well as admitting responsibility for the coup d'etat by the man himself, there is documented proof that it's not just the poor people of Ukraine fighting against oppression of the evil Federation and the rest of the world supporting their cause out of the kindness of their heart that I can provide to those who call me a stupid nutjob.

5. Meanwhile:

[sarcasm] Poor people of Crimea are invaded by evil Russians, so let's attack the civilians. [/sarcasm]

Seems like a running theme lately. Nice.

Whatever you say...

8. I've sent you a note, posting here would be a bit too off-topic.

This boxing trainer from my hometown just died in the fighting:
Isa Munayev died in the battle for Debaltseve
I didn't know him personally and I'm pretty sure I only knew about the boys he trained and took with him to Ukraine by proxy.
Still, we have lost soldiers before (Royal Life Guard barracks are only 1 km away) but they were actual professional soldiers deployed by the government. Having regular members of the local community go and fight and die is a new thing. I don't know how the boys in Ukraine will fare now that their father figure is dead.

10. To put it into perspective, he was not originally from Denmark. He was from Chechnya, one of Dudaev's generals, who participated in both Chechen wars. Munaev is responsible for deaths of thousands of people, gun, drug and slave trafficking as well as televised beheadings. He was injured and fled in the early 2000s, after which he received political asylum in Denmark.

He formed "an international peacekeeping battalion" and joined the UA government last summer partially because Ukrainian nationalists from OUN fought on his side during the Chechen wars and for the most part because RF and Kadyrov kicked his ass ten years ago.

If he converted and dragged Denmark citizens to war, well, that's prime ISIS material right here.

Don't feel sorry for this man.

I don't really feel sorry for him, but it's just weird. However I don't feel like he betrayed our nation like I do with the Daesh soldiers.

OSCE reports that Luhansk was bombed with cluster munitions again.

13. TL;DR: Crimea residents were polled by a Canadian agency and an overwhelming amount (93% with a 3.5% margin of error) support the decision to join Russia a year after it happened despite sanctions, transport blockade, financial issues, Western banks stopping servicing Crimea, corporations like Apple stopping all sales, and the like. For reference, the turnout of the 2014 referendum was 83% with 96% voting "yes".

Long version:

There is a project called "Free Crimea", which task is to protect and free Crimea from the oppression of the evil Russia. Berta Communications and Canada Fund for Local Initiatives have recently commissioned GFK Ukraine to do some research on how people of Crimea treat the "annexation". They have polled citizens of all major cities and of all age categories.

The results they got have shown that 82% of Crimean population fully support joining the RF, 11% are in favour while 4% are against it. Out of those who are against it, 55% said that it is because they think the transition was not done legally and has to be re-made according to law. The research also polled people about their main concerns and the probabilty of war between RF and UA in their opinion as well as a list of news media they use and their opinion on said media outlets.

Presentation of the results:

People behind the "Free Crimea" project presenting the results of this research for 70 minutes and discussing how to save the people of Crimea that apparently don't want to be saved.

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting this.

17. Yeah, anytime man.

On a sidenote: A patriarch of the Ukrainian church, Filaret went to Washington to ask for weapons and to honor the previously signed treaties. He even gave McCain a medal.

It would be mostly irrelevant if not for one interesting detail: He was excommunicated from the Orthodox Church in 1997 on the accusations of blackmailing, perjury, defamation and creating a schism religion. He created his own religion that nobody recognizes and made himself the head of it when his leadership said he is not worthy to lead people as a figure of faith.

TL;DR: Basically we have a heretic that claims he preaches peace but goes to the other side of the planet to demand weapons to kill ethnic Russians in Ukraine with that he calls terrorists because the Russian church kicked him out 20 years ago.

18. DPR keeps returning "Cyborgs" captured in the Donetsk Airport to their parents. The only condition is for them to personally come pick them up, travel through the city and witness first hand what their children did. Or, if you are more inclined to believe UA side, to witness how terrorists bombed themselves:

First prisoner exchange this year. From what can be seen in the video there is a stark difference between how prisoners were treated, DPR sends clean and healed up UA soldiers while UA sends tortured and malnourished DPR rebels. One of the rebels claims he was stabbed with a knife while being "questioned", showing stitched scars. Another one claims some did not survive interrogation:

Volodimir Ruban, a head of Ukrainian "Humanitarian aid and prisoner exchange effort in the ATO", talks on his facebook about a shameful state of prisoners they traded with DPR.

"We do not value people's lives, we will lose this war"

The comment section is filled with "patriots" calling him a Putin's agent and a traitor.

20. Thanks for the video.

Valeriy at 1:20 is saying they left the terminals to avoid casualties. In contrast with that DPR reported UA was trying to take it back for days, losing hundreds of people. With actual footage of dead troops, burned tanks and interrogations of captured soldiers, some of which were posted in this thread ealier. Ukrainian media has not provided any tangible proof on the airport other than citing facebook posts of their own writers as source. You can't doctor this much footage in such a short time, so this guy is either lying or is terribly misinformed.

Right now UA media either reports that they still control the Airport and their soldiers are destroying thousands of russian spetsnaz soldiers every day or they report that losing the terminal was actually a part of the plan, as it lost it's strategic value. If you kept an eye on the media, the same thing was reported every single time about previous defeats when UA army lost thousands dead, injured and defected. Everything went as planned, we are not fleeing, it's a tactical withdrawal, Putin killed thousands of his people to get this useless bit of land, slava Ukraine!

Andrey at 3:25 says he has no direct proof of Russian regular army, but the rebels are using Russian weapons. The guy half a minute ealier fired a Russian machine gun, then took a Russian assault rifle with a Russian grenade launcher and launched a Russian VOG-25 grenade. Both sides are using the same weapons, both sides armed themselves using the same stockpiles.
