    You can't really mine stuff like gold and diamonds with a stone pickaxe, right? And iron isn't really that hard to fine, just try and make a quarry mine or something.

    If you go through caves, it is really easy to find iron early on, going through caves my first set of stone tools are my last set of stone tools. Caves are really good for some resources for when you are starting out, and don't have the tools to do large scale mining such as quarry mining and other things.

    Iron, with the exception of my sword.

    Diamonds aren't much faster and iron is so abundant that I might as well use iron!

    Yeah, but the problem is that gold is really rare, just like diamond. It would take a lot of time and manpower to find gold, you would be better off just using enchanted iron pickaxes.
