What's the appeal of Minecraft, and why is it so popular?

I've played Minecraft a number of times, and while it's not really a game that I enjoy all that much, I can see why it as become as popular as it has. As far as games that actually let you do whatever you want, then Minecraft is about as free playing as you can get and that is the main appeal I think

Games such as GTA and No Mans Sky are open world also, but still not to the same level as what Minecraft is.

I kind of like the imagery of the game and the whole build what you want and make of it what you want kind of feel. I am not too big into it overall though.

Minecraft, Minecraft, Minecraft....it is still so popular. It is the only game some people pay. This has to change sometime soon, and it will.

I think that when Minecraft first came out then nobody could foresee that it would still be going strong now, but the fact of the matter is that it is. Minecraft as evolved into much more than just a computer game for some people, and while to others it may not be seen as a serious game, the fact it's still attracting millions of players means that we have to start taking it seriously as a contender for one of the games of the decade, whether we personally like it or not.

Minecraft did have that sense of "surprise" to it. It was unexpectedly addicting within a matter of days. It still continues to grow in popularity. Some claim that this is due to the ability of the game to draw in connected players and worlds all at once, plus to be a sort of 'building block' game of Legos for adults. Minecraft is all right.

I agree with that sense of surprise. It gets a little lost on you once you have played that game for so long but when you first start, that is definitely a big appeal of the game.

The game draws on your creative and adventurous spirit I assume. That's what appealed to me. This is easy to draw on from the younger set of people which is why it is so popular with children. Also, the older I got, the less I found it interesting.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of fun to me. It sounds like Minecraft not only has something for everyone, but really, something for every mood. Feel like a challenge, you got it. Want to relax and do something a bit more "mindless," you got that too.

I love the idea of this. The creative aspect and all the dynamic play sounds intriguing. I'm kicking myself for never having tried Minecraft. I had no idea there was so much to it.
