What's the worst MMO you've ever spent money on?

Exactly. I think the buy to play model is the best for MMOs. You dish out some cash and buy the game, and then you can play it for as long as you wanted.

The only true MMORPG I have spent money on was Lineage 2, and it was for monthly fee. While I agree that I have spent too much time on the game over the course of over a year, I do not regret the money I spent. It was good experience in my own personal gaming history lol.

The other game I paid for playing on a server was Never Winter NIghts (1). I contributed some money to the owner to upgrade the server hardware, but then he couldn't stop one of the moderator bullying me. So I left the server and regret the $70 I donated.

That's ridiculous. The owner could have stopped him easily but he clearly didn't want to.

Oh yeah, I remember Lineage 2. That game was really time consuming, even more so then more modern MMOs like WoW. The amount of grinding you had to do in that game was just insane. But it had really good graphics for its time.

TOR for me. I bought that game day one, blazed through the story in my free month and just never touched it again. As a plus, now they are free to play, so money well spent on my part...
On the plus side, the story was very good and getting married in that game was kind of funny (one sentence and then bam, married. Also, dark side points lol).

Generally, I regret every money I've ever invested on games because, well, the game might close tomorrow and won't have the chance of accessing what I bought with money anymore... that's why I usually avoid spending much money on games since in the end it's going to be futile.

I'm a cheapo so I don't really spend too much money on MMOs. That being said, I was super hyped and was sure I'd buy ESO when I saw the announcements and trailers. I played the beta and was so incredibly disappointed. I've heard they've fixed things and made it better but who knows. Not spending my money there.

Compared to what, 2 hours at a theater? I mean yeah I get that not all games last forever, but in terms of entertainment by price point- video games are always going to win that margin hands down. If you really start doing a breakdown it's going to come out ahead of a night out at the club with friends, a 2 hour movie and a dinner out. I spent 5+ years playing WoW before I quit. I'll never get that money back but it's negligible in comparison to the amount of money I spent eating out over the years. Plus I have a lot of fond memories out of it. Can't say the same about eating out most of the time. I can tell you straight up as a notorious observer of my personal finances that I easily spend way more on a yearly basis eating out than I did on WoW. $180 a year for a WoW sub at $15/month versus $1800 a year eating out at 1 $5 meal a day. Don't regret paying for a game if you spent ungodly amounts of time on it because there's nothing to regret finances wise or enjoyment wise. Seriously. Now if you spend money on a game (like $60) and only played it for like 1 hour then yeah there's something to regret.

Conquer Online, terrible, awful game that was pay to win, and pay a lot.

I saw someone else mentioned Stronghold Kingdoms. I spent like $10 on the game ( it is f2p) just to get to where I was getting 2 cards per day for free. But then I realized how incredibly pay2win it was, and 2 cards per day were nothing.

Imagine this.. for a completely free2play player, it takes 19 real days to build and man a full castle. ( more or less). We had this guy beaten, his castle was destroyed and all his troops were dead. We had a general coming in 5 minutes to take his city. In those 5 minutes, he was able to buy a complete castle and have it fully manned. 19 days vs 5 mins.. that is the definition of pay2win.

It is a shame, because the game was overall pretty fun, but there was just no upper limit on what you could spend. When a new world starts, it might take a f2p player a week to get their second city. But there are people who have 15 cities in that same amount of time.

Sadly, it was Cabal though in a private server not the official one. The GM offered great deals because we are "pioneers". Long story short, I was 15 bucks poorer and ate noodles for a long, long time.

I would have to say Smite as well. It was just a big waste of money for me. I played it for about a week and was just really confused and I never got into it. I remember seeing it not too long ago and thinking about how much of a waste it was, but I guess in the long run I just learned to do a little more research before spending my money.
